Gan, the only son of a toy shop owner, and his girlfriend Ai are just normal teens who like to tinker away with robotic inventions - that is, when they're not out keeping the world safe from evil! Together with their giant robot dog Yatterwoof, and their small incompetent robot Toybotty, Gan & Ai transform into crime-fighting duo Yatterman to fight for world peace. Waging battle against perennial nemesis, the Doronbo gang. Formed by sexy villainess Doronjo and her lackeys Boyacky, and Tonzra, the Doronbo trio will stop at nothing to recover the powerful wish-granting Skull Stone, but they'll have to get past Yatterman first! Classic seventies anime series Yatterman flies to the silver screen in a brilliant crime-fighting explosion of candy-colored camp, over the top adventure, and pure popcorn entertainment. Directed by legendary cult director Takashi Mike, and featuring a brand new plot and re-imagined characters.

Yatterman = Action Heros + Campy Humor = Classic Midnight Movie!!
Wow, I enjoyed it. The funny thing is that the Villain was more interesting than the good guys. Special effects were pretty decent and overall campy and fun. It's more for adults than for children...it doesn't drag as much as other Japanese live action movies. I recommend it for people who like live action hero movies that also enjoy campy humor.

A translation letdown
I am a big Takashi Miike fan who owns 44 of his films. This is far from his best but probably not his worst. It is hard to tell because the subtitles are beyond awful. The grammar is horrible, incorrect words are used (like none for void and past for passed)and much of it just doesn't make sense which makes the story not make sense. I knew what it was supposed to be about so I filled in a lot of blanks while I watched it.I is taken from a kid's show and seemed made for young children so I was surprised at the sexual content. This includes a robot with human looking naked "boobs", which are weapons, gets aroused in a battle (with a dog-like robot)and begins thrusting while yelling "Yes! Oh, yes!, I'm coming".

I give it one and a half thumbs up.
It was a little campy, and some of the cultural differences in humor made some parts seem more creepy than funny. One scene in particular was so unimportant, and mind numbingly pointless, it had no business being called a scene. However, if your looking for something that is not so deep, but simply entertaining I would recommend this, it is fun, and the majority of the silliness is entertaining. My only recommendation to potential consumers of this product is that you research the tv show before watching the movie, otherwise you may miss a large number of references (this movie was clearly made for viewers already familiar with the Yatterman franchise).

Psycho Yatterman
Yatterman is strange yet funny and comical. The hot bad girl and ok guys remind me of team rocket from Pokemon since their machines keep getting blown up and they get blasted and they have a bicycle for three. This film also reminds me of final fantasy, such as Vanille's weapon and moogles. Yatterman seems to lose battles and gets destroyed a little to easy but the main heros, yatterman 1 and 2 were cool and well likable. The fighting and music number were enjoyable. The coolest weapons were the big fork and spoon the bad boys used in the opening. Overall, it can get over the top sometimes, the translating is junk though you can figure out what they really mean, and there is a lot of sexual stuff as well, such as the bad guys big robots. One's a girl who shoots ammo from her breasts and the other's a guy who shoots from his... you know... I dunno what the rating for this is, but I doubt it's sutiable for little kids, which stinks since Yatterman was a cartoon to begin with. Yet,I still enjoyed the film for some reason. I'd watch it again and it's worth checking out.Just like Onechanbara 2 and Rec 2, I got my copy at ToynJoys.

Fun but it could have been better
The storyline is quite similar to the cartoon, there's a bit too many sexual innuendos, some of which are not even too subtle, not for kids...and the battles could have been more interesting and fun.

A MUST SEE for anime fans
Yatterman follows the pair of 'Yatterman' heroes number 1 and number 2 (who are Gan, a man who runs a toyshop and Ai, a woman whose family runs an electronics store respectively) as they attempt to stop the evil Doronbo Gang (made of the muscle, Tonzara, the 'brains' Boyacky and their leader, the beautiful yet deadly and slightly inept Doronjo) from taking over the world using an ancient artifact known as the Skull Stone with help from their robots, Toybotty, a dice shaped helper robot with a slight attitude and Yatterwan, a robot dog mech who should never be underestimated.Yatterman in a nutshell is NOT a subtle movie, but then again neither was the anime, there will be times when you will tilt your head and go '..what am i looking at here??', one such example is in the middle of the film during a fight between Yatterwan and a new mech constructed by Boyacky and this new mech uses... machine gun and missile launching boobies... i only wish i was making that up, but this is NOT a bad thing as it reflects the anime really well. The acting in the film is really good, Shō Sakurai (Gan) and Kyoko Fukada (Doronjo) in-particular i feel steal the show however it should be said that the whole cast does an amazing job bringing the characters to life, especially during the quiet and less hectic scenes, especially near the end of the film, you possibly won't be shedding tears, but it certainly cuts through the craziness of giant robot fights and other strange goings on in the movie.Another strength of the film has to be it's humor, very faithful to the anime, it's full of somewhat crude humor (but not distastefully crude) and slapstick humor, shown especially in the beginning fight scene making the fight seem like a looney tunes or tom & jerry inspired battle and cannot help but put a smile upon your face.If there is a negative to be found it's that the movie, like the anime, can at times feel like it's mixing it's intended audience a little, at times coming of as 'kiddy' and intended for kids and then at times making it seem it was intended for a more mature audience, also there is a trailer of sorts after the movie for a follow up movie which features the other iconic Yatterman mech, the Yatterpelican, this is to reflect the tradition of the anime and show a featurette of the next 'episode' but it just makes me feel a little upset as there are no talks of a sequel yet and it looks an amazing follow up to this film.Minor negatives aside, i LOVE this film, as it remains faithful to the anime (much more so than some OTHER live action movies based on other IPs, i'm looking at you 'Legend of Chun-Li') and it provides a good hour and a half of entertainment that should hopefully leave you smiling from ear to ear from beginning to end, however you should only view this movie IF you're an anime fan, a fan of the Yatterman anime or if you wish to see a faithful adaptation movie, HOWEVER this is most certainly NOT a children's film and shouldn't be seen by them despite it's outwardly 'cutesy' or 'bubblegum' look.5/5 - a definite must see :)

Fatal
