good 4 pack
I watched the 4 movies all in a row starting with Kiba. I thought it was alright but not a real good movie. The acting and the story were a bit odd. I would rate Kiba 1 & 2 a score of 3 together. I liked Family 1 & 2 much better than Kiba and I would rate both Familys' at a 4. It had a better storyline and more action. As a set it was nice to have them all in the same dvd box. I'm happy that I saw them and added them to my huge Miike collection.

Hmm
Endo kinichiHere you have four films Takashi Miike made for the Japanese direct-to-video market. For those that have the Miike bug bad, this is a good one-stop to fill out the filmography. And I would say go ahead with that, just with some reservations...Firstly, "Bodyguard Kiba" is about the earliest Miike film you can find released in the US. He made it in 1993. It's a bit dated, but is actually fairly accomplished for an early work. He sticks to many karate-action flick conventions, but that's to be expected. The mistake a lot of fans make when finding these films is they're expecting to see the "full-blown" Takashi Miike. You gotta remember, he was starting out, he was applying himself to genres and what audiences expected. One thing that comes to mind after seeing both the "Kiba" films, is how much of a non-presence Kiba really is when he's not kicking butt. In the first film all the plot and backstory is given to the guy he's protecting. And in Kiba #2 "Apocalypse of Carnage" (what a waste of a good title), he gets shot in the leg and sits out the whole end of the movie! I'm serious. And you don't hardly realize he's gone. And the most jarring Miike moment comes near the end when we are told Yoko's story. A scene follows with her getting violently beaten, drugged, and fondled. I like it, personally. It doesn't jibe too well with the rest of the movie, but it is the first instance of what would become a hallmark for Miike - the rape scene. Those familiar with his filmography know what I'm talking about."Family" is a bit of a dud among Miike's crime films. It's got the barest threads of a yakuza family story, weak motivations, stone-faces characters, and a VERY incongruous heavy-metal soundtrack. The other off-putting thing is the very strong video look. For a long time, because of how it looks, I thought he made this in the mid 90s. Actually, it was 2001, made between "Dead or Alive 2" and "Visitor Q". The fact that he delivered a flat one between those two masterpieces shows that nobody's perfect, right? The only part that leaves an impression (other than the tank - hah!), and is also the strongest Miike moment, is the rape scene at the end. And hey, we got a rape scene, we gotta have Kinichi Endo do it! It's appropriately twisted, with our heroes arriving too late to stop it. It's such a standout, the whole scene is played again at the beginning of "Family 2". In fact, doing some research online, I don't think there ever was a "Family 2" - I think it's just another third of the "Family" film separated for US release. Cuz honestly, the whole film feels like a lame third act.So, the final verdict? If you're looking to be a completist, the 4 disc is the way to go cheaply. If you want to be more selective, buy the separate release of "Bodyguard Kiba" and maybe "Family". Avoid the sequels. All in all, you probably won't watch this much, but Miike is kind of like Pokemon - gotta grab 'em all!

Some Of Miike`s Weakest Works...
Cinema auteur Takashi Miike`s work has always been brilliant but spotty - he`s done some amazingly original and shocking films ('Visitor Q', 'Gozu', 'Happiness Of The Katakuris', 'Audition'), some of the best ultraviolent crime dramas since Kinji Kukasaku ('Ichi The Killer', 'Fudoh', 'Izo', 'City Of Lost Souls', 'The Yakuza Trilogy'), a breathtakingly beautiful entry ('Bird People Of China'), some lightweight but enjoyable ('Crows Zero', 'Zebraman', 'MPD Psycho', 'Sukiyaki Western Django'), and some almost painful to endure, and two of them are here. 'Family' and it`s sequel are dull, slow-moving and devoid of any of the elements we`ve come to expect from Miike - it wants to be a 'Godfather'/'Sopranos' hybrid, but misses all marks completely. They go nowhere and go on forever simultaneously. You wait in vain for something bold, brash or Miike-esque to happen, credits roll, and you`ve been had. 'Bodyguard Rika' isn`t painful, some might like it to a point, but it`s sequel is simply more of the same, making you re-evaluate the first film. I`d recommend ANY of the films I mentioned earlier before plopping down cash for this set - if you`re looking for something similiar, I`d go with 'Triad Election' and it`s sequel on the Tartan Asia label - two great films for a lot less cash, and very rewarding all around.
