About how long does one cap last for it's purpose?

It depends on you, this cap is thick and will last for weeks if you take care of it and wash when need. Hope this help.

About how long does one cap last for it's purpose?

I have several caps that I had purchased over six months to year ago that I still use. I just wash them and keep using them. They are very durable.

will this fit a 5 year old?

I believe it will - I have been using this product for some time now. I wear my hair very short, being 75 years old my hair is gray (of course) and has a mind of its own - this stocking cap keep it in place.
