Kristian Vedel (1923-2003) designed his charming and timeless family of BIRDs back in 1959. Though only the small child BIRD was originally produced, it quickly became one of the most successful Danish wooden products from the 1950s. Today, the entire expressive BIRD family has been re-introduced by ArchitectMade, including the originally designed parent and grandparent BIRDs. (The grandparents are distinguished from the parents by their rounder, more squashed torsos - guess the effects of gravity work on wooden animals the same way it does on us humans). By swiveling their heads in virtually any direction, a BIRD can be made to express almost any conceivable frame of mind, be it happy or sad, curious or nonchalant, alert or asleep. Turning the bodies upward or downward makes them either male or female, lending still more variety to these deceptively simple creations. Each BIRD is handmade by a small wood turning company in Denmark using only high quality smoked and natural oak wood. Collect a gaggle all at once or build a collection one at a time. A child stands about 3 inches high (7.5 cm), a parent 4 3/4 (12 cm) and a grandparent 4 1/8 (10.5 cm). Available in a light Natural Oak and a darker Smoked Oak. One BIRD per package.
