I Am So Thankful these Exist!
When my baby boy was diagnosed with stage 2 ckd, I had to stop giving him everything he loved in life. Ok. That's an exaggeration. But his entire way of eating had to be changed. It was confusing to know what was ok for him to have and what was not. I'd read ten articles and get ten different answers. My little boy, Chewie, was used to getting a greenie bone every night before bed and they were no longer safe. Hard on the pup, and hard on the pups parent! Finally I decided we were going to turn this negative into a big positive. I started cutting up fresh, organic fruit that we would share in bed before going to sleep. He loved it. A friend of mine in London knew Chewie's diagnosis. Knowing how much I love him, she sent us a box of Mattie's treats. They are perfect!! Chewie absolutely LOVES them! These treats are hard, though. Chewie needed me to break them up for him. This was a problem: my hands are getting a little arthritic. I started placing the treat in a small container and adding just enough bottled water to cover it. Just let the treat soak in the water for 5-10 minutes and it softens up just right! You can easily break the treat apart with your hands, and it's much easier for little dogs with smaller mouths and missing teeth to eat! Also, ckd dogs require moisture rich foods, so this is another reason to give it this added hydration. This treat change, along with a food change to Dr Harveys Canine Health, looks like it's helping! Chewie's kidney values (BUN and creatinine) were too high one year ago. Last week we redid the blood work and did a UA. HIS RESULTS ARE NORMAL on BOTH. His appetite is great, he's playful, and I couldn't be more thankful! We are repeat buyers of Mattie's treats and highly recommend them!

Thank you Mattie!
It's so sad that it takes a sick dog to create a great product. There is only one other brand that are true kidney friendly treats and they are crazy expensive. I showed Mattie's treats to my vet and he said they looked great! My dog, Paul, had kidney disease when I adopted him six years ago and he's been loving these ever since. Paul has gone through two bouts of acute kidney failure in the last nine months and these were the only thing he would eat. So then I started breaking them up and mixing them in with his food and he would at least eat most of it! Everyone who has a dog with chronic kidney disease knows the challenge of getting them to eat and the joy/relief you feel when they finally do! Mattie's treats are a godsend! I am so sorry that Mattie's parents had to go through this with such a young dog. I hope they know how much they have helped others whose dogs have kidney disease. What a legacy! I wish they were available through autoship because I order two boxes a month! After reading other reviews, it seems the only complaint is that the treats are too hard. I've attached a video on how to easily break them up!

Cannot recommend enough!
My senior dog had diabetes and was suffering from kidney failure, so he couldn't have any sugar or salt. I was SO GLAD to find these cookies! Even in his last days as his kidneys stopped working and he felt yucky and had no appetite, he would eat these. I think it's like soda crackers for humans when we're sick. I let him eat as many of these as he wanted in his last days since he didn't want anything else. Cannot recommend enough, especially if your dog has health issues!

Foolproof treat my Stage 3 kidney disease Labrador will eat
Sometimes, when your chronic kidney disease BFF-dog just won't eat, you start grasping at straws. These treats were one of my straws. Figured there was very little to lose, given my 14 yr old labrador's stage 3 prognosis. And through all the ups and downs with her condition, these treats have been something my formerly ravenous labrador almost always enjoys snacking on. Fun to see her get excited about a treat, and also a great distraction when administering SubQ fluids. Easily breakable into smaller pieces, they can be great for all sizes of dogs, and most types of medium to poor dental situations. They are crunchy - so if your dog is soft-food only, you'll want to do-what-you-do to make sure food is chewable. Like most reviewers, I am fully trusting the company's info on ingredients and nutritional values. (I know, dangerous really). I don't have the $ to test the treats myself, and sure wish there were some 3rd party testing results that reinforce the owner's test results. Packaging is useless (sorry Mattie's parents, but true). Every cardboard container I've received is basically an expensive, cardboard envelope that's open on both ends by the time it arrives at my house. The plastic crinkly bag inside is in semi-sad shape and never airtight. But the treats still seem to be in good condition; they do arrive within 2 days of order. I would LOVE it if the company would stop wasting money on cardboard boxes, and design an airtight, recyclable, flexible container for the treats instead. All said and done, I've been ordering these treats for months, stage 3 kidney disease dog. She loves them. And anytime I can brighter her day, is a good day.

Mattie's Treats have saved my Great Dane
Is that an exaggeration? Probably not. My eight-year-old male Great Dane (Odin) was recently diagnosed with early stage renal disease. So he is now on a renal diet, and his favorite treats were no longer allowed. Although he enjoyed things like Watermelon - he was craving crunch. He didn't understand why he could no longer have his old faves, and that broke my heart. I tried a $25 box of treats. Although they are probably great for a smaller animal, Odin just wasn't happy since they were slightly larger than a postage stamp. I continued my search and stumbled across Mattie's treats and gave them a try. First, their price point is awesome. Second - who can resist a heart-shaped treat?! Not this girl. Most importantly, Odin LOVES them, and he is definitely a happy camper again, happily crunching on his new favorite. And if YOU have a smaller pup - the treats can be broken into smaller pieces (not an issue in my house). I reached out to Mattie's owners, expressing appreciation for their amazing product. Can you believe that they replied? I love that every purchase is helping Odin and helping a small business. Many thanks to Sean, Heather & Mattie!

DOWN FROM 5 STARS BECAUSE OF THE HEART SHAPE
I loved these treats for my 11# dog when they were dog bone shaped. I could easily break them in half for her. She has about half her teeth and can't chew very well these days. My frustration started when these treats became heart shaped. I cannot break them in half. I have to use a hammer or hard object to TRY to break them in half. I end up with some pieces but mostly crumbs. My husband can't even break them. They are too thick in the heart shape. I really hope Mattie's Treats will read this and consider going back to the easier to break shape of a dog bone--or just make a smaller treat for tinier dogs. I'm looking for another treat for my dog with kidney disease.

Priscilla Loves Them!
My Priscilla is a 14 1/2 year old dog afflicted with kidney disease. While she's on a low protein, low phosphorus and low sodium diet, I searched Amazon in the hope of finding a treat that had the same nutritional characteristics and found Mattie's Healthy Treats for Dogs with Kidney Disease. Since the nutritional values were such that I didn't have to worry that these treats would worsen Priscilla's condition, I took a chance and ordered a box. When it arrived a few days later I anxiously offered one of the heart shaped treats to my girl who, much to my relief and delight, gobbled it down like she hadn't eaten in a month. She has continued to scarf down these treats so I made sure to place a second order so as not to run out of them. It's such a pleasure to be able to reward my pal with treats that I know are made specifically for dogs with kidney disease. Bottom line, I am one happy and satisfied customer!

Beware the size of the box
When I ordered these I didn’t take much notice of the pack size! On arrival the box was quite small which makes them very expensive. I also ordered another product at the same time and although the don’t profess to be snacks for dogs with a kidney complaint they are low in protein, phosphorus and salt so I would probably recommend Betty Miller Banana, Apple & Blueberry Flavour Bones which are 1/2 the price of the Mattie’s Treats
