(Pack of 2) Formaldehyde Air Rapid Test Kit, 5th Generation, DIY Testing Indoor Air

This test is cheap and easy to use. I have flooring from Lumber Liquidators, so I wanted to test my flooring, even though it isn't on the list of the problem flooring. It took about 45 minutes to test, and thankfully it came out good.

As part of my research as a chemistry student, I compared this product to industry standard methods of determining formaldehyde concentration in air. This home test kit performed worse than all of the other methods for detecting formaldehyde. The biggest issue was that the color change (which is the premise of the test) was open to interpretation. To a trained eye, a slight color change was noticeable as the formaldehyde concentration changed. To an untrained eye,however, each test appeared to match the color of the 0.5mg/m3 on the color correlation chart (with the exception of the 0.00mg/m3 test). Perhaps the worst part about the home test kit was the false negative even when the concentration is very low. The attached image shows that when the industry standard products average 0.04 mg/m3, this home test kit read a concentration of 0.13mg/m3. This shows that when the formaldehyde concentration is actually safe, this home test kit would say it is not, based on CARB Phase 2 requirements.A full report on this research is available if interested.

It is easy to use, relative cheaper than other products, but still pricy, because it is for one time use only. I don't know how accurate it is, but it did work for me as a simple screening. Mine didn't come with English instruction, but since I read Chinese, I would like to translate it here.Step 1. Pour the powder from the two aluminum packets into the testing plastic box.Step 2. Pour the liquid from the clear bottle into the testing box, mix the liquid with the powder by covering the box and shaking it slightly until the powder completely dissolved in the liquid.Step 3. Open the cover, and place the testing box in the room(or inside your furniture) with stable temperature and humidity for 30 minutes.Step 4. Pour the liquid from the brown bottle to the testing box, cover the box again and shake it slightly to well mix the liquids together.Step 5. Open the cover, and place the testing box in the room for another 10 minutes.Step 6. compare the color of the liquid in the testing box with the color checker board.

It seems fairly good and seems to work, but it is not easy to differentiate the various shades of green which are even a little different within the two photos provided.

The test was easy and quick. The instruction is in Chinese, but we were able to read it. For the price, I think it's a good product to buy.

One use test, not worth the price. Spend a little more and get a much better tester.
