WHITE READ-ALOUD AWARD • The first book in the If I Built series kicks off with a young boy’s ideal wheels, from acclaimed author and illustrator Chris Van Dusen. “Energetic verse and jubilant, action-packed artwork make this tale of a young inventor’s fantastic daydream a joy ride.”— Publishers Weekly ”My car will be cool! My car will be keen! My car will be one big fantastic machine!” Sitting in the back seat of his dad’s car, Jack begins to imagine all the ways he would improve the vehicle. After spending the night designing, tweaking, and refining, Jack is prepared to give an eye-opening tour of the car he'd like to build. For starters, there's a snack bar, a pool, and even a robot named Robert to act as chauffeur. Plus, the motor releases fragrances of blueberry muffins and roses rather than gasoline. With Jack's soaring imagination in the driver's seat, readers will be deep-sea diving one minute and flying high above traffic the next in this whimsical, tantalizing take on the car of the future. Packed with detailed illustrations recalling an era of classic American automobiles, bright colors, and an infectious rhythm, this wonderful read-aloud is a launch pad for imaginative fun. Review: My son loves this book—and so do I! - As many of you already know, if your kid likes a book, you'll end up reading it together over and over and over again. That means it's pretty important that you like it, too. It's never fun when you ask your little one to grab a book and he comes back with something you can't stand reading. I'm therefore very picky about the books I buy. Chris Van Dusen's "If I Built A Car" is pure pleasure. First of all, it's just a terrific concept: a creative young boy describes his dream car. The illustrations are lush and vibrant, and the rhyming verse is creative and playful. Mr. Van Dusen perfectly captures the magic of a child's imagination. And while I think you couldn't go wrong getting this book for a boy, I'm confident many girls would be enthralled by it as well. Definitely a book you'll delight in reading and rereading. Enjoy! Review: Fun cute book! Awesome! - This is an amazing book and my child’s new favorite. We read it probably 4x a day..! It rhymes like cat in the hat and is automotive related which makes it fun for dad lol ## Technical Specifications | Specification | Value | |---------------|-------| | Best Sellers Rank | #9,843 in Books ( See Top 100 in Books ) #88 in Children's Books on Cars, Trucks & Buses #242 in Children's Science & Nature Books #726 in Children's Activity Books (Books) | | Customer Reviews | 4.8 out of 5 stars 3,808 Reviews | ## Images ![If I Built a Car (If I Built Series) - Image 1](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/91hY0+ZlfRL.jpg) ## Available Options This product comes in different **Media Language, Media Format** options. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ My son loves this book—and so do I! *by K***E on April 14, 2017* As many of you already know, if your kid likes a book, you'll end up reading it together over and over and over again. Van Dusen is the author and he has three other books in his "If I Built" series. Since I already had "If I built a School" I knew I had to get this book too. My grandkids loved that book and loved "If I Built a Car" just as much. These two books opened up my grandkids imagination and we too talked about schools and cars that we would like to create. ## Frequently Bought Together - If I Built a Car (If I Built Series) - If I Built a House (If I Built Series) - If I Built a School (If I Built Series) --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.be/products/1694142-if-i-built-a-car-if-i-built-series](https://www.desertcart.be/products/1694142-if-i-built-a-car-if-i-built-series) --- *Product available on Desertcart Belgium* *Store origin: BE* *Last updated: 2026-10-26*
