One of the very earliest known live recordings by psychedelic jam band legends who conquered San Francisco and later the world, Quicksilver Messenger Service! Features the rare Jim Murphy-led 5 piece line-up laying down the acid blues grooves the band would follow throughout their career with tracks such as 'Suzy Q,' 'Smokestack Lightnin',' 'Babe I'm Gonna Leave You,'Hoochie Coochie Man,' and more!

Quicksilver Messenger Service - 'Fillmore Auditorium - February 5, 1967' (Purple Pyramid) 2-CD
Possibly one of the better live QMS offerings out, right now. Tunes here I couldn't get enough of include the rocking opener "Suzy Q", "Acapulco Gold & Silver" (one of the band's theme songs?), the awesome "Cod'ine", the surprisingly good "Instrumental" followed by the every-bit-as outstanding disc two with the well-received "Walkin' Blues", "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You", the boot-stomping homage of Bo Diddley's "Hey Mama" (great harmonica), "All Night Worker" and "Pride Of Man". A contact of mine was telling me about a hard-to-find 2-lp bootleg of this same show he once had some years ago + the fact that this legit release of the live QMS performance more than makes that record completely obsolete. Highly recommended.

... a Quicksilver fan after buying and listening to the Happy Trails album
I became a Quicksilver fan after buying and listening to the Happy Trails album. That album is one of those albums that I would take to a deserted island with me. I will obtain anything from this period up to 1969 even though I love anything this group does. They are one of the essential San Francisco bands and rate up their with the Airplane and Dead.

EXCITING PERFORMANCES/OKAY BOOTLEG SOUND/EQUAL TO ONE DISC OF MUSIC.
These tapes have been around for some time now. All the music could fit on one disc if the label had edited out some of the tune-ups between songs. The performances are exciting with that QMS "sound" fans (like me) like. If you've heard the previous night's set (Feb. 4th) that's been released a couple of times on different labels, this night is as good as that night as far as the music goes. There's plenty of sonic glitches and drop-offs, but the guitars and vocals are pretty well defined. The booklet notes read like someone's fantasy of those times who wasn't there, and the band photo isn't from the Fillmore stage. But the performances have that period excitement that QMS could generate on a good night. The only reason I purchased this set is because I was lucky enough to hear the band live a number of times back in the late '60s when I was in college in Palo Alto, and we would make the trip into The City on weekends, and this is a good example of how good the band was. Four "stars" for the performances, but the sound issues/two discs greediness ripoff are a bummer.Songs included are--Disc 1--"Suzy Q", "I Hear You Knockin'", "Dandelion", "Acapulco Gold & Silver", "You Don't Love Me", "Co'dine", "Instrumental", "Smokestack Lightnin;". Disc 2--"Dino's Song", "Walkin' Blues", "Drivin' Wheel", "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You", "Hey Mama", "Hoochie Coochie Man", "All Night Worker", "Stand By Me", "Pride Of Man".So if you don't already own this night's concert, and you're a deep QMS fan who doesn't mind the sonic glitches running through the music, and realize that the music could fit on one disc, the performances are typically good from that period. QMS was like other bands (Steve Miller Blues Band, Santana Blues Band--as they were originally named) early on during that time--heavily indebted to the blues--but the blues songs are played with excitement with several good guitar solos/duels. Murray's vocals and harp playing don't distract from the performances. And Freiberg plays his viola on a couple of tunes. And with songs that appeared on their first album, this is a real time machine before the Dino Valente (or Valenti) era and the band's sound changed.

I have loved this band since the first time I herd them ...
I have loved this band since the first time I herd them in 1969!!!On this CD set, the playing quality of the band really varies. Sometimes they sound ok, but often they sound like they have only played together for a few months and haven't decided how to end songs. The band sounds really bad on some of these songs. This is for hard core fans only. Love QMS, especially the early recordings, despite the constantly flat vocals. Do not start with this CD is you want to get into this band.Three stars is generous.

Quicksilver Messenger Service
Peter Felten

Something for completists
One of the recent batch of archival QMS '60s concerts, generally characterized by less than good sound, this concert is so fiery or interesting.Bear Records (Michael Gaiman) released a few years ago the previous and subsequent concerts. These seemed better performed and marginally better sound-wise.Nothing seems special enough for repeated listening. But the 2 cd set is nice to have, and the cover looks good.

WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE...
War etwas unsicher bei dieser Platte. Es gibt manchmal was bootlegs anbelangt, böse Überraschungen. Ich habe schon einige Aufnahmen gehört, bei denen man kaum was entnehmen kann. Da macht auch der coolste Led Zeppelin Gig keinen Spaß. Höre mir gerade QSMS Fillmore an und ich bin zufrieden. Man hört tatsächlich alles raus.
