Learned So Much! A MUST for every parent but especially FIRST time parents.
This and Sleep Sense were my baby Bibles during this first year with my first child!!! I recommend this book constantly because of the life saving it was to me and my husband!!!! The overall take away = learn your baby. Study and be a student of your baby and you will know way more than you ever thought you could!

Disappointing, some awful advice
I had high hopes for this book as a parent and an OT (as is one of the authors) but have so far found it really disappointing. There is some good / helpful info in there but it is mixed up with too much that is obvious, contradictory (such as advocating implementing a routine in the first 2 weeks including delaying feeds if they are too close together, then in the next sentence to follow your babies cues), outdated (use a dummy to delay feeds in newborn period - current advice and what had worked here is using boob only on first 2 weeks to build your milk supply) or even unsafe (put your newborn to sleep on their side. Just no, and I am shocked any health professional would put this advice in a book or that books containing this advice can be bought). Will pick out some useful bits like massage strokes but will be ignoring most and definitely would not recommend.

Excellent
There are a few bits of advice I'd ignore in this book with regard to formula feeding and some other things but this is essentially an excellent book. The most useful one I've read so far. It helps you understand your baby's sensory world and the real reason she cries (sensory overload) and tells you how to either stimulate or calm depending on her state. Timing and reading your baby's cues are key. This is a game changer. Read alongside two videos - 'The Happiest Baby on the Block' and Dunstan baby language and you're all set.

Interesting & thought-provoking on calming strategies, but safety advice is VERY out of date
Very out of date on current safety standards and recommended babycare practices, but helpful regarding suggestions to keep baby calm and limit over-stimulation. Therefore, focus on the baby-calming bits, but ignore the practical advice as it's not always correct or considered safe.

A useful read
I found this book really good for giving me ideas for age suitable routines and play with out being over prescriptive. Obviously every baby is different and I wouldn't follow it all to the letter but gave me some good ideas, particularly on how much sleep babies actually need and thinking about making sure baby isn't over stimulated. Some of the advice is pretty obvious though and really just common sense! Altogether a useful read though.
