This award winning film directed by Alan Parker (1976) stars Jodi Foster and Scott Baio. The film centers around a child gangster determined to rule over New York City. ITV Studios Blu-ray review
Just a quick review about the iTV Studios Blu-ray...As another reviewer mentioned, the movie and commentary play fine, with a 5.1 soundtrack that sounds great and the picture quality is great as well, but none of the Extras will play at all, due to the UK format. I don't think it's PAL though, but maybe 50i? I'm not an audiophile, so I'm not sure of the format. But if you want this film on blu-ray, it's worth $16, IMO, until Paramount finally releases it in the u.s. But even then, I would seriously doubt that these extras would be included. Just a hunch. As for the movie itself, it's really a film for those who grew up with it, like me. In fact, it's the first film I ever remember seeing in the theater (I was 4 years old :-). Because truthfully, I'm not sure this film holds up for anyone seeing it for the first time, now. For example, a friend of mine saw it (even several years ago) just laughed after it was over and called it "corny as hell". And the acting isn't really great from all parties - specifically the actress who plays Blousey Brown. Terrible performance. In fact, if I'm totally honest, she basically ruins every scene she's in. However the other main actors are good enough, especially young Jodie Foster of course.Overall, though, I love it. I love the splurge guns. I love the fact that it's an all kids cast acting as gangster adults. I love just about every song from the uber-talented Paul Williams, especially "Bad Guys", "Fat Sam's Grand Slam", "So You Wanna Be a Boxer", "Down and Out" and the finale "You Give a Little Love". This is one of those movies that takes me back to the place in my life when I saw the film, and in this case, I was an innocent 4 year old boy. :-)

Paramount Pictures Presents...Bugsy Malone
Bugsy Malone is a great kid gangster movie from 1976 and available for the 1st time in the US (the one Foster/Baio with red/gold/black cover). Don't buy the UK version as it probably won't play on your US players. The blu-ray is a tremendous upgrade from the old DVD and this is probably the best it will ever look with this new 2K scan. The kids are great and so is the music. If you've seen it before, then you know what I'm talking about. Not many extras on the disc, but Paul Williams gives a little insight on the music. If you read the negative reviews you will miss out (they are on the UK version that doesn't work for them). Buy the correct version (see above) and enjoy this classic. You won't regret it.

A Fine, Quirky Movie I've Wanted To Find For 38 Years
Even after almost 40 years, this is still the quirkiest of films, one which I still remember well from way back then and had longed to see again. There's an old saying that the amazing thing isn't that a singing dog sings well; the amazing thing is that he can sing at all. The amazing thing about this film isn't really that it is entertaining and clever with good songs and some good dubbed singing; the amazing thing is that this film -- a 1920s style organized crime theme in which all the parts are played by children and the machine guns shoot cream puffs -- was made at all. Can you imagine pitching this concept to a studio??But, for whatever reason, it works and it works well. I'm an old dad who watched the film with my two children, ages 11 and 13, and we all enjoyed it, probably each of us for different reasons and on different levels.Jodie Foster has one of her first film roles here -- this film was released in 1976, the same as was "Taxi Driver," which is what I've always understood to be her first. She is charming in "Bugsy Malone."I highly recommend this DVD, if you can find it. (Incidentally, this version, although, there's Chinese lettering across the DVD's container, is in English. I wasn't sure from the blurb of information with Amazon, but remembered the film so fondly that I took the chance.)

A Great Film With A Fantastic Cream Pie End.
Having just watched this I will say if you like a gangster film with teenagers and a fabulous cream pie throwing end you will love this film. Absolutely brilliant. I always try to give honest review as I collect and watch classic films. The songs and dance routines are brilliant. Very funny in parts. Overall a damn good film. Not to be missed. PC. 12. 04. 2019. Even after 43 years this film still stands the test of time.

‘Remember, it’s history you’ll be writing.’
This 1976 British film is set in New York, 1929 [according to the original sketches]. It is a musical caricature of 1920’s Chicago and based on the events of real life gangsters but acted entirely by children. The opening is full of slick one liners and following a ‘hit’ on one of Fat Sam' men, the story follows the on-off relationship of Bugsy Malone [Scott Bajo] and Blousey Brown [Florie Dugger] set against the impending takeover of Fat Sam’ eastside territory by Dandy Dan who introduces a new weapon –the rapid firing splurge gun, Gangsters are not shot, they get splurged, struck by various custard tarts. What follows is a highly entertaining light musical featuring no swearing, no sex but plenty of fun splurging with the guns as the kids run riot.On inserting the disc you are taken directly to the main menu page offering Play, select scene, extras [promotional video, characters, photo gallery, art gallery-storyboards, from sketch to screen and finally trivia notes], setup [subtitles and audio commentary –both auto set to off]. Whilst all are interesting only the sketch to screen is recommended. This –as it says, shows the original concept sketches like a cartoon storybook and it’s interesting to see what the original thought process was as it has a number of crossings out etc on them. The film is highly recommended for family viewing. There are plenty of nice little touches such as the peddle cars the Gangsters use, virtually toy replicas of the grown up ones, dropped onto peddle go-karts. One final note of worth is Jodie Foster shows her outstanding acting talent as Tallulah –Fat Sam’ moll and Boni[ta] Langford appears as a precocious singer at the auditions while Louise English [of Benny Hill fame] is also credited as the ballet dancer. A definite ***** rating.

Blu Ray(?) version Bugsy Malone
I was disappointed when I received the DVD. The cover whilst well printed did not fit the DVD and has the appearance of a "Fake". I reviewed the versions on offer and now discover that this version is "Amazon's choice". I have now decidednot to return the DVD based on this comment and hope that it is actually a genuine remastered Blue Ray copy and not a cheap fake. Fingers crossed!

A nice & novel idea - not perfect, but good fun !
Putting children or teenagers into roles normally all reserved for adults at least twice their age results in a film that is really quite quaint and interesting to watch, particularly because it's so professionally executed and produced. Of course, it has to be a musical for it to work - considering the "hard" and potentially vicious background to the film, viz. gangsters, racketeering, murder and molls ; but it's the contrast between the "soft" and the "hard", the ( extremely young-looking ) kiddies and ( in the back of ones mind ) Al Capone, that keeps it interesting and amusing to watch ( despite the lack of an interesting or exciting storyline ), particularly because many real-life "adult props" ( e.g. the cars and the guns ) are converted into nothing more than toys, suitable only for youngsters. The songs and the music compensate for the lack of any really interesting dialogue ; although full credit must be given to many of the young actors for simulating the "gangster-speak" - and the associated hard-nosed, tough adult dialects - so well. In fact, some of the music is really rather good !

All Acted by Childrfen
There are no adult actors in this film. It is a really watchable film loosely based on the life and times of a gangster in the USA in or around the 1920's The very large cast of child actors obviously had the time of their lives playing in this film. It is imaginative in its concept that such a subject can be enacted by children and very well scripted to show violence is such a way that it is actually part of the comedy. A good truly family oriented film that anyone can watch and enjoy.
