I love this movie
I love this movie, I thought that you could not remove the Korean subtitles, that begin right away when starting the movie. However, you can get to a menu and turn subtitles off. I am so glad I tried once more and am enjoying one of my favorite movies for me. I had watched it as a kid, and it was my father's favorite as well. I read Alvin York's biography over 35 years ago, and the movie depicts the real events well.A true American hero who had great conviction, courage, and faith. There is a new book that has come out in recent years about Alvin York, and I would like to get it as well at some point. it is: Alvin York: A New Biography of the Hero of the Argonne by Douglas V. Mastriano

My All Time Favorite Movie
My Thanksgiving Day Special ! I always watch this on Thanksgiving. It is just a great movie with a perfect blend of humor, romance, morality issues and old time religion. If you think this is a "war movie" in the modern theme, it is not.Yes there are some battle scenes but, they are far less violent that the video games kids are playing. This is a movie you need to just sit back and enjoy. You won't be sorry.

Tennessee boy tours Europe with his hobby of marksmanship occupying his time.
Sgt. York was a real person & if this movie sparks your interest then read more on him. This movie is entertaining to say the least, Gary Cooper's not so believable accent, the cheesy acting from most of the cast, & the majority of the sets are just painted backdrops. Directed by Howard Hawks, it won 2 Academy Awards (including best actor for Gary Cooper). I'd recommend this movie for anyone interested in seeing a film about WWI made during the early years of WWII.

Classic film; poor DVD
Sgt. York is a classic story created with the assistance of Alvin York himself. It tells of his Christian salvation and his military heroism, which he treated with the greatest of humility. Even today it stands up well, despite its age (1941).The specific DVD I purchased on Amazon was a big disappointment, though. Although the video quality is fine, it is from South Korea and has only Korean subtitles. I enjoy watching movies with subtitles, particularly when I show them in the US History through Film class that I teach. Be especially careful when buying any movie from a third-party seller! I have found that many of them are foreign knock-offs of questionable quality and lacking special features, or even subititles. This one was from Amazon itself, though.

I love this movie
The way the fighting was handled in WWI was significantly different than WWII. I wanted my grandson to see Sgt. York and help him see what men had to deal with fighting in that war and compare it to WWII. It would hopefully give him some understanding of Henry in Red Badge of Courage and the marching, setting up camp, moving, marching, and do it all over again. Henry stewed about what he would do when faced with battle until the first contact. Fresh troops coming to the front in the later war movies referred to them as fodder for the enemy as was written by Stephen Crane. I was hoping it would help him to understand and empathize with Henry in Red Badge of Courage. We haven't watched this one yet so I don't know whether my choices will work. I love this movie. I saw it when it came out on TV in the '50's.

Fantastic and True Story
This movie has always been a favorite retelling of the true story of Alvin York. Sadly, but also amusingly, the back of the case is written mostly in Korean--apparently it is no longer produced in the US? Every American should watch this movie at least once to understand the struggles this brave man went through in World War I and how he overcame them. Despite the case, the movie was in excellent condition and played well (we turned off the Korean subtitles).

This is a great TRUE story!
I personally related to the true story of Sgt York, because my Dad who was born in 1893 (my Mom was a lot younger and they had seven kids) was in World War One and also in France in the foxholes where he was shot in the knee and exposed to mustard gas. He had nightmares from that war, and my parents had a metal bed frame, and one time when he had a nightmare about the war, he actually bent the metal frame way down! This book is so great as it has humor and also so serious and true. Sgt. York was such a hero and before he had to go to war he was saved and accepted the Lord Jesus as his Savior, and also did not believe in killing anyone or using guns! I won't tell you anymore. You HAVE to read it, and then you will want to tell others to read it!

Thank you Korea
For some reason classics like this are now virtually only available as a Korean import but the quality is excellent. The film is very much of it's time even if not entirely historically accurate - it is a Hollywood biopic after all - but a marvellous portrayal by the ever lugubrious Gary Cooper.
