Stanley Yelnats, who is the main character, has a poor family and his dad tries to recycle old shoes to make a fortune. The story begins with Stanley "stealing" a famous sport player's shoes. He goes to court and gets two choices. Jail or Camp Green lake. Stanley chooses camp Green Lake. At the camp he had to dig 5 feet holes. For me, the most powerful part of the story was when Stanley makes a friend, Zero, he makes a deal with him. Zero was the fastest digger at Camp Green Lake, but Zero never learned how to read. The deal that Stanley made with Zero was if Zero digs part of his hole Stanley had to dig, Stanley would teach Zero how to read. I thought this was the most powerful part of the book because this is the start of their relationship and it gets better throughout the story. The theme of the story, which is friends stay together, relates to us. For example when Zero got sick Stanley took Zero up a mountain and fed him onions.
