does anybody use this successfully to wrap the bars of dumbbells?

I have never seen it used on dumbbells. As it wears, it would be a mess to remove.

Sailing, Windsurfing... Will it hold up for hours in the salt water, sun, & Sunscreen??

Not sure. I use it at the gym and it holds up really well against sweat.
