Used To Like This - Until We Found Out What's In It
We used to like this pizza dough, but when we needed to re-order, about two or three years ago, we found out it was on back-order, so we signed up to be notified when it was in stock again. After forgetting about the product completely, we finally received an email a day or so ago to say it was available once more.During that time, we've had to become a lot more careful about what's in the food we eat, and as no ingredients were listed for this item, we asked the manufacturer for a full list of them. This is what they sent us:INGREDIENTS: Wheat Flour, Azodicarbonamide, Alpha-Amylase, Benzoyal Peroxide [Benzoyl Peroxide?], Ascorbic Acid, Thiaine [Thiamine?], Riboflavin, Niacin, Iron, Folic Acid, Water, Sugar, Yeast, Soybean Oil, and Salt. May Contain L-Cysteine.For those who don't know, Azodicarbonamide is a product brought to the public's attention by Vani Hari (aka Food Babe), and it's thanks to her campaigning that Subway finally agreed to remove it from their bread. The problem is, this is not really a food ingredient, although it is used as a dough conditioner (it makes it more elastic, which means it's only there for the manufacturer's benefit since it's easier to work with) - it's actually a chemical that's also used in making yoga mats, synthetic leather, and shoe rubber. It's also important to realize that this ingredient is banned in Australia and Europe for health reasons, and in Singapore, using it can even lead to a jail sentence. And then there's Benzoyl Peroxide, which was new to us, but it seems like this is a bleaching agent, and it's also used as an acne treatment. On the manufacturer's website, they state that their "frozen pizza dough is made of the finest and freshest ingredients", and "all ingredients used in our product are natural and we do not add any additives or preservatives to our dough" - something we would dispute. So, while frozen pizza dough sounds like a great time-saver, it looks like we'll still be making our own pizza dough, as we have been for the past few years.
