Historically important record
This is a great record and I’m glad it was re-released so it is now affordable. Colored vinyl and art work by band member is a nice touch also.

An art-punk masterpiece!
If you're looking for the best of art-punk/post-punk, look no further. Diverse instrumentation that creates an overpowering wall of sound, infectious grooves from the bass and drums, fantastic lyrics and vocals. What more can you ask for?

this might be hard to explain, but...
...I'll give it a try anyway, because this album is just so damn good. Here goes: Alternative, independent, punk, what-have-you - for me, these types of music can ultimately be pared down to the idea of freshness. They aim to go about music in their own way not because they are self-important or particularly rebellious or prideful, but because listeners' ears beg for the new. Listening to The Raincoats reminded me of why I like this type of music; they do an especially excellent job because, although novel, they don't seem interested in an outright assault of innovation/experimentation. They manage to achieve a listenable yet stimulating balance between the straight-forward and the eclectic. Sure, I love the avant-garde in music, the relentless pursuit of sounds that have not yet been made, but even that can wear thin with time. And when it does, The Raincoats are there to remind us that genuinely interesting songwriting will always be around.

Music at it's best!
I choose not to look at the Raincoats as a great "girl" rock/punk band. They are a great rock/punk band regardless of sex. They have inspired many great musicians and listeners of both genders. To call them "punk" could cause some people to think of music that has no more than three chords, screaming replacing singing, and lots of spit and blood. This would be a mistake in regards to the Raincoats and many other great "punk" bands. The Raincoats create a style of music like no others. They wrote intelligent music with superior vocal harmonizing as well as lyrical writing. The way they infused beats and guitars (not to mention some wicked violin) can only be fully appreciated by listening to their songs over and over, it's infectious. This is not just a great girl band, this is a group of women musicians who prove that great music is made from brains and not balls. Their music is timeless and if you can't enjoy/respect it on some level, then you might need to check your pulse. If you have the chance to buy this CD then get it!

A Young Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down
1979 was a golden year for alternative music. After wrestling with 'difficult second album' syndrome, many of the big hitters from the punk era bounced back with impressive recordings : 'London Calling' by The Clash , 'Machine Gun Etiquette' - Damned , 'Setting Sons' - Jam { actually their fourth }. There were also noteworthy debuts from Stiff Little Fingers, Gang Of Four, Joy Division, B-52's and The Slits. Two less publicised - but no less worthy - recordings arrived by way of entrances by The Mekons and the Raincoats. How well I recall standing in a record shop with these two fine discs in either hand, deliberating which one to buy and the Mekons finally winning out { must have been that chimp }. It was a really tough choice because 'Fairytale In The Supermarket' by The Raincoats had been one of my favourite singles of 1979; a song that along with the Adverts '77 gem 'One Chord Wonders' cried out " YOU CAN DO THIS!!" more than anything by The Sex Pistols or Stranglers et al. And it's this track which opens The Raincoats wonderful eponymous debut, the first of eleven tracks fuelled more by raw enthusiasm that slick musical ability.Ex Slits drummer Palmolive's keen, busy performances suggest that she may have been trying to prove a point to her erstwhile bandmates , and The Raincoats' version of 'Adventures Close To Home' is preferable to these ears than the polished one which appears on The Slits' 'Cut'.Clumsy yet spirited, Gina Birch's bass playing is to the fore throughout - particularly on 'No Side To Fall In' and 'Off Duty Trip' - ,while fellow founder member Ana Da Silva's scratch guitar is as vital to the post punk sound as her contemporaries in bands like The Delta 5 or the nascent Au Pairs. Her playing on 'The Void' reveals a definite penchant for The Velvet Underground, a point well and truly confirmed by Vicky Aspinall's insistent John Cale style violin flourishes that saturate the album. Other treats include an idiosyncratic version of The Kinks' 'Lola' , and there's also a couple of guest turns from original X- Ray Spex sax brat Lora Logic - surely the Pete Best of punk - sounding remarkably discordant on the track 'Black And White'.Defiantly feminist, influential, empowering and - for want of a better expression - full of spunk, 'The Raincoats' is a great debut from a great band, released in a great year, and needs to be mentioned in the same breath as the best from that heady, creative time.

I can't get enough of this album, it is ...
I can't get enough of this album, it is one of my favourites. Yes it is hard to listen to but that's because it is Different, it was made in an era when they were trying out new styles and ideas.

Kaufen!
