Modern Observational Physical Oceanography: Understanding the Global Ocean

the water in the ocean, what's it doing?
I nearly became an oceanographer but got seasick on my first cruise, so now as a natural scientist and engineer in another field, it is a delight to be reading this book. Even the appendices are informative, fun even. One appendix lists words that mean different things to different communities. Even the word "data" can mean real-world data to one, while it means computer-spewed synthetic data to another. This book is definitely on the real world side. Is the ocean getting deeper? Wunsch tells us all the problems with trying to make sense from tide gauges, mainly, there have not been enough of them well enough distributed recording long enough. Trouble is, there are so many extraneous things that affect the measurement. I bought the book after looking at Amazon's "See inside". Whether this is the book for you or not will be better determined by "See inside" than anything I might have to say, other than, "Buy it; you'll like it."
