Observer resin band has short life; too expensive

*by P***4 on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 22, 2015*

These bands are way too expensive considering how short their life is. I was considering buying a titanium metal band, which should have ended the band problems, but my watch crapped out before I ordered one. If you have a Suunto Observer watch, you are stuck buying one of these factory units as far as my research goes, so just find the best price. Consider a metal band if available.Additional notes about the watch: The watch worked great when I first bought it, and over the years, I have worn it diving to well over 100'. As time went by, the compass crapped out. It would appear to calibrate normally; after the two slow rotation turns it required, it stated calibration was successful. But the next time I tried to get a compass bearing, it wasn't working. Next went the altimeter, which is presently stuck at about 14,500' on the read out, at my altitude of 371 feet. Then I noticed moisture inside the watch; fogging up the middle of the crystal. I had of course changed the battery a few times, and figured in this highly humid Oregon atmosphere, it just needed airing/drying out. I put it in a vacuum jar, and left it under a 27" vacuum for a couple of hours. But, the next time I took a shower, or got it wet --- more moisture fogging up the crystal again. After a couple more times through the vacuum procedure, it started eating batteries. Plus, one day it just locked up, and would do nothing. I replaced the battery one more time, which reset the watch, but continued having problems with it locking up. It now hangs on my desk as a curio. Now, for months, it has been running very well, and as always, it is still accurate to about 1 second a month, which I find amazing, since it is not an "Atomic, radio controlled" watch.I was thinking of sending it back to Suunto for repair, but never looked into it, so don't know how much $$ it would cost, or it it's even possible to get Suunto to repair it. In the meantime, I started wearing one of my 4 Casio "G-Shock" watches. I've owned them for many years, a couple from the '70's, before buying the Suunto Observer, and all of them still operate error free. Santa got word of my dilemma, and now I have a 5th Casio watch, a Casio Men's PRW2500T-7CR Pathfinder. It's solar powered, set by the "Atomic" radio signal from Ft. Collins, CO., with an aluminum case & titanium metal band. It has a Compass & Altimeter, plus other functions I don't use. I strongly recommend it to everyone, and would say stay away from the observer.

    elastomer suunto band for X6M

*by G***Y on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on February 21, 2011*

First of all, I replaced the leather band and got the Plastic/elastomer (whatever its made of) which a watch like this should've come with in the first place. Now when I go bicycling or hiking and sweat I can just rinse and dry it off. Leather bands retain sweat and begin to smell, this band was made for activesports.Only complaint I would have is that the buckle is a bit tight when pushing the non-buckle side of strap through but it does hold band in place very well.Only other thing is on watches like this the band has to be watch specific so you can't just put any straight ended band on, it has to be specific, like mostor all of the Nixon watches.

    Great Watches, lousy bands

*by B***C on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 26, 2011*

Suunto makes great watches but if I had known how many bands I would have to replace over the years I would not have bought into the brand in the first place. I actually have three different Sunnto watches and they all have had band problems. The Observer, most expensive, is the worst but in general the experience is frustrating. This is the fourth band I've had to order in the last 8 years for the Observer. The others have only been replaced once each but they are sailing watches and not worn even close to everyday. For what they cost they should stand up better. They always fail in the same manner, the crap rubber like material breaks and that's it. I even had a leather band special ordered from Finland and that only lasted 1 year. Until I finally break down an buy a different everyday travel watch I'll only buy the cheapest bands they have and expect to replace them. Most frustrating...
