Q: can this fit a school binder and books for high school?

Yes. It will fit books, binders, and a laptop.

Q: What do you call this style bag - with the cross back strap instead of the standard shoulder strap?

I've had the same question and haven't found a decent answer. Best I've seen and been able to figure is that it's a "courier messenger bag". Even with that it's been fairly difficult to find more than about three or four different bags made like this. Which is a shame, I love the cross-chest-one-shoulder-diagonal-across-the-back design and wish there were more options than just styled for a video game I care nothing about, or spending two hundred bucks. Timbuk2, Chrome Industries, and 5.11 each have a take on this design.

Q: Is it possible for the bag to rest against your waist like a standard messenger bag, or is on your back the only option?

Against your side doesn't work so well, it would be nice but it slips so on your back is what its designed for.

Q: Could you wear this the standard way, with a shoulder strap?

No it dosnt have the shoulder straps, just one big shoulder to side strap
