Almost perfect design
The chair is fantastic. I don't understand how the person in the chair is supposed to unlock the chair when the wheel locks are on the back wheels. Because of the wheel locks, the user does not have full independence. She will always require someone else to assist.

TO THE BUYER BEWARE!!!!!
purchased my first KD Smart-Chair @ 1 year ago. I purchased the regular model.Within the first 4 months, the rear drive wheels wore down to SLICKS. The chair became dangerous to use, as the chair would slip and slide all over."No tread left on the rear tires" Stopping the chair was next to impossible as it would slide all over. I called up KD Smart Chair to complain. I was told by a gentleman named Lenny, that the tires were not available unless I purchased the motor that it was attached to the tire. The cost of each tire motor assembly would be $365.00. That was ridicules!. I tried to have new tread bonded on to the worn out tires. It did not work. Lenny said that I should send him pictures of the worn out tires. Lenny than offered be a new heavy duty chair to replace the old worn out one. Of course this upgrade would cost me an additional $550.00. I agreed because I had no choice. The new chair arrived with good new wheels on it. I have thus far spent @ $2600.00 dollars. Now the new chairs tires have also worn out, making the second chair just as unsafe as the first one. I called Lenny again and he graciously lowered the price of each wheel to $220.00 each. So here I am with 2 KD Smart Chairs that are useless and unsafe. I searched and searched . I finally found replacement tires somewhere in China at a cost of $45.00 each. I ordered 4 of them. The new tires are made of a different type of material and so far have lasted much longer than the original Smart Chair tires. If a company cannot supply replacement parts for a product that they sell, they should not be in business. So I say "Let The Buyer beware" In my opinion this company should not be in business. From M.B. in New York

Deceptive description and deceptive seller......
Awkward folding....HEAVY! My biggest gripe is that it does NOT do 15 miles....it will go 15 KILOMETRES.....a little over 10 miles. And it is slow. We have problems going up curb cuts...it just spins it's wheels. Does fine in a mall or to the medical building, but not great on outside surfaces. Now, the seller ..........charged my card the day I ordered this item; all $2700 !...and they carefully marked that it shipped the next day per Amazon seller rules. Wonderful!; except, they had NOT shipped it and hadn't planned to ship it for TWO WEEKS! After I called repeatedly I got someone to "expedite" the shipment.....from FLORIDA ( they are in New York) so we did get it at the 2+ 1/2 week mark.

It is relatively easy to load and unload from our van. Excellent company to deal with.
Much sturdier than it looks. It is relatively easy to load and unload from our van. The power controller was damaged while we were on vacation. The company overnighted a replacement at their cost. Absolutely saved our vacation. I would highly recommend them, both for the quality of their wheelchair and the excellence of their customer service.

Good for travel but not for everyday use.
Good for travel, but not for everyday use. - Best features are the lightness and simplicity to fold and take with you, and the long lasting batteries. The bad things are that the seat is not the size advertised. We were told the heavy duty chair had a seat that is 17.25 inches by 17.25 inches. In fact the seat is exactly 16 inches by 16.5 inches. Also, top speed was rated at 5 miles per hour. In fact, top speed is 3.75 miles per hour, which is what an independent website stated. We had a heavy duty Invacare power chair that goes 5 miles per hour, and this Smart Chair cannot come close to keeping up.The bottom line is this. This is a good chair to travel with, but not good for everyday use.

Wow, it gets better and I hope my description of my second purchase enlightens
I previously purchased a previous model, the standard model and felt since I purchased the new hd model which has been updatedthat I would share my experience.A lightweight, foldable wheelchair which is transportable in a trunk or backseat, I get asked where did I get it, where ever I go.B dual Lithium Ion batteries not subject to memory effect, Each slender battery fitting into the battery tube that is located from the rear wheel upward at a 45 degree angle towards the seat and weights approximately 3lbs each, wow, what a difference. I purchased an extra battery pair, just for back up and usually carry the small electrical charger with me so that when I go the the doctor or some other place with an electrical outlet, I've decided that it is really efficient to recharge batteries at each location when possible.C One battery for each direct drive motor which is 35% more efficient than models with a separate rear transaxle to deliver diluted power to the wheel. the transaxle seen on most other wheelchairs and scooters transfers the power from the battery to the motor at a substantial loss. Direct drive means each wheel is given its own power without having to go through the equivilent power robbing device similar to the way an automatic transmission robs a car of all its power that would go directly through a clutch and fly wheel system.D the dual motors are brush less which means the motors do not need surfacing . My last full size scooter required the brushes to be replaced as they got worn just a tiny bit that cost me 3 hours of labor to accomplishE the new model has a much larger seat and has a more sturdy build.F The cabling and electrical connections on the scooter are better laid out and easier to put together which is an important consideration especially since I am disabled and the additional mobility to put the first one together was taxing.G I found that when putting the wheelchair in my car trunk , that folding the scooter so that the rear (bigger wheels) of the scooter was the easiest place to pick up the scooter and sliding it into the back of my car by grasping the scooter under the bottom of the folded scooter on each right and left underside. I found this technique to be fabulously successful and thought that I should put it in my review.H This new technology ELIMINATES 75lb DUAL LEAD ACID BATTERIES old fashioned motors with brushes that are constantly in a state of degrading effectiveness and the horrible resultant replacement which was difficult and irritating and knowing that as soon as I replaced them that the wearing down would commence immediately and the only thing I could do was buy an electric transportation wheelchair like the kdsmartchair that had a different type of motor battery drive system. Ahhhhhhhhh, it was a relief. In addition, each component is replaceable, individually, and if you think about it, a separate battery with a separate motor, I love it. Less is always moree.
