A 1/4 inch airline is too small but a 3/8 inch hose is too large. It needs a latex hose to be able to stretch over its non-barbed nozzle. I boiled water and melted a hose enough to jam it over the nozzle to be able to use the pump. Functionally it works to pump steady water into my recirculating vase aquarium about 1ft above water level and should have enough power for 2 feet if you're using a 5 gal bucket (next project).
