The smallest bit is thinner and shorter than your average needle.They seem to be durable enough, just don't intentionally try to bend them and they should suit you well. Also, unless only a very small portion of the bit is protruding from the collet (like 1/4 inch) you can't apply too much force or you could bend these bit. I've only used them on balsa and pine and birch toothpicks so far to test them and not surprisingly they did very well. On the balsa the thinnest ones just poke right through (bout as soft a cork). They did alright on the pine and birch, but the going was much slower. One definitely needs patience to get through harder woods, and metal would still be doable but very slow. I'm currently making from scratch about a 1/300 scale model of the Italian training ship the Amerigo Vespucci, and these drill bits are perfect for drilling anchor points.The pin vice:This is made of aluminum and brass and is pretty cheap. There were still small metal filings inside the collet and it was at first difficult to clamp down on anything. After some fixing the thing works fine.Before I did anything with this pin vice, I knew it needed a little work.First I blew out the metal shavings inside the collet.Then I used some wd-40 on the threads, this helped a ton.I can say with certainty that you CAN in fact clamp down on every size drill bit this set has, but you may need to adjust the collet just ever so slightly before bits will start fitting nicely. I've been able to grip the smallest bit (#80) with ease. In fact, I had to bend the collet back just a little wider with a jack-knife for it to accept the largest bit.The storage casing:This thing is a pain in the but. I do like the design, but it is pretty poorly made and mine was way to tight. It was impossible to open the way it was designed to do, but a jack-knife did the trick nicely.EDIT: Okay, I just need to point something out. While the case is very cheaply made, I did just notice that the tab that lets you hang the case also has little things on it that intentionally stop it from opening. It turns out you must push the tab out of the way before you can open the case. After that, well, it's still pretty tight, but much more manageable.If you are a serious hobbyist who would use these daily, you may want to buy something a little more expensive.But if you're only occasionally using these, this kit is pretty good for the price. I wouldn't have paid $15 for this or even $10, but I got it for like $6.50 and am very satisfied. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great to have for small engine repair. *by G***B on March 13, 2025* I broke a few bits on my other set. Was cheaper to buy this set rather than individual replacements. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good *by A***W on March 25, 2013* I liked the price tag on these small gauge drill bits. I usually see a set almost a like for $20.00, and up. The pen vice is not like pictured. It is a bit shorter, and wider of a pen. The vice unscrews in two places. One in the spot in the top to show a hidden two sided drill chuck. Then the second spot at the bottom where you have your main drill chuck. The pen comes with two chucks that are double sided. Different sizes on all four. The very first side you'll have out of the factory is the correct size for these small gauge bits. It's a little tricky at first to open the chuck to get your drill bit in. I had to carefully pry one of the four slots open with a knife just to get the drill bit in. It's a bit of a trick to open the case. If you look at the picture you have the drill bit side, and a plain side. You must put your thumbs on the plain side to slide the clear plastic case. There will be a drilled hole on the top to slide out the bits. The hole is a bit too large, and you can accidently slide out two or three drill bits at the same time. Just make sure the hole lines up with your drill bit. I've had this vice, and drill set for five days now, and I have broken four bits. Now I'm going to say it was my fault. I purchased this set to put windows in my models. Ships from Star Trek, and so on. I really like this set, and I like the price tag.I broke these drill bits probably with too much force, and going too fast. If you are trying to get a set for modeling like the title says. Jump on it. If you need it for something other than modeling on plastic.
