pull the alarm that is hanging down into the water out of water and dry thoroughly with your t-shirt or towel. Once it is really dry it will turn off. Just happened to me today for the second time since I have had it. It has saved me, and now I know from experience how to turn it off. Dry, dry, dry!

Q: How does one test the device to be sure it is really working?

put batteries in it and take a damp cloth and wipe across the 2 metal contacts if it works it will begin to make noise. it must be wiped completely dry to turn it off

Q: Which way should it be placed on the ground? Which position?

Two ways, but either way you do it the two silver electrodes on the bottom of the box need to be in contact with the horizontal surface where you're concerned about water. So, either 1) stand it upright with the electrodes down, touching the surface or 2) the bottom comes off (there's a clip) so you can sit just the bottom of the box (w/ the electrodes) on the potentially wet surface and mount the rest of the box (connected by wires that are wound up inside until you remove the bottom) on a vertical surface using screws. I chose the second option because I don't think this particular unit is water proof and I'm worried about water dripping down, potentially through the box and the electronics. I mounted it a few feet away, out of danger and also more easily accessible than the location where I need the actual sensor.
