This is a rare masterpiece Tibetan wooden Thangka painting. The painting itself is so delicate that it is even more detailed than thangkas on canvas. The quality of this wooden Thangka is superb. It was handmade and hand painted by Tibetan artisans in Nepal. Mahakala is a protector of dharma in Vajrayana Buddhism, and a deity in Chinese and Japanese Buddhism, particularly in the Vajrayana school. He is known as Daheitian in Chinese and Daikokuten in Japanese. In Hinduism, Mahakala is a name of Shiva, but it is also a name of one of his principal attendants, along with Nandi, which is one of Shiva's watchmen, and so is often represented outside the main doorway of early North Indian temples.
