The butterfly represents light heartedness, beauty and freedom. In many nations of the world the butterfly is considered to be a symbol of reincarnation and immortality of the soul. This is because the butterfly passes through several stages of development before it reaches its final shape. In zoology this development is called metamorphosis. It begins when a small caterpillar hatches out of the butterfly egg which is often also called larvae. When the caterpillar has reached its full size, after shedding several layers of skin, the most complex stage of its development begins: the transformation from a creeping caterpillar that eats leaves into a butterfly which can fly and feeds on flower nectar.
