LJ Hutchen 5217 Precision Series Intermediate Alto Saxophone

I bought this sax for my son who was quickly advancing and needing a decent instrument. After reading good reviews for the LJ Hutchen student model, I figured it was a good risk to take on the intermediate model. Out of the box, it looked great and was briefly checked over by my son's teacher without issue. Soon after my son started playing it more, he realized that the lower keys were not sealing when triggered. I eventually got the sax to an experienced instrument repair guy who took a look at it and shined a light down in the sax and showed me the massive air leaks in those lower keys. He said he could probably make it playable, but it would take some serious work. From what I could see, it looked like the whole bell section was put on a bit cock-eyed. The good part of the story was it was returned to the original company (it had been longer than the 30 day return policy for Amazon.com) with no problem and a refund was promptly given without any questions asked. The company did say they had some quality control issues with the run of this particular model. It may be that some of these instruments are just fine. The quality of the rest of the instrument seemed good to me, but I'm a trumpet player. The company ended up selling the great Selmer S80 mouthpiece that came with the sax to us for a great price as my son fell in love with it and didn't want to send it back. We ended up buying another sax that he loves from a local music store for a little bit more. This sax just didn't work out. You take a chance when you buy instruments online. Fortunately, everything turned out well.
