Releasing her own music from a young age, Wells learned to keep her work close, and toured independently while developing her palate and performance across the U.S. It was in a humble garage studio in Los Angeles that Well s recorded her 2008 breakthrough, The Symphonies: Dream Memories & Parties, picking up praise from sources as varied as NPR and SPIN, who compared her to a feral, streetwise Nina Simone. 2012 will find Wells touring behind Mama and preparing for the release of Pillowfight, her long whispered-about collaboration with legendary producer Dan the Automator.

My favorite album of the year.
The lyrics are so subtle and beautiful, and simple, but the star of the album is the amazing music composition. Never, I would say, has influences such as hip hop, folk, electronic, classical, and traditional found a home so perfect as on this album. Emily Wells crafts stunning songs with a deft hand, and this is absolutely a must listen.

Emily Wells is great, this record is awesome.
My title says it all. This woman is extremely talented. Have you ever caught her live show? SHE DOES IT ALL BY HERSELF! She' a one woman band! And this album is great. Buy it.

Another home run
I was a little concerned I wouldn't be into her new sound. Honestly, some of the tracks that I heard prior to the release struck me as repetitive. Thankfully, magically, they were fine-tuned and produced in such a way that I can't figure out why I was having doubts. This is an album that you'll love to listen to as an album, at full volume, on a nice sound system. Whatever Emily is doing, she needs to keep doing it, because this album sounds phenomenal, just as her two previous albums did. While the music is unmistakably her, she's done well to give each album its own identity. Mama doesn't disappoint. I can't wait to see where she goes next.

A True Original
Just saw Emily at live at the Philly World Cafe and she is such a engaging and gifted artist. So rare to see someone really doing their "own thing" with such energy. Love this album - she is really on to something new here. See her live and you won't regret it. PS - she did a ripping cover of "Fever" at the end of the set-- hope she records it.

Love it.
I think this might be my favorite Emily Wells album.... Mama's Gonna Give You Love, Johnny Cash's Mama's House, Passenger. LOVE.

Good album
Not a great album but worth buying if you like low-fi or trip-hop music. Probably the stand out track is Passenger but it is all pretty good stuff.

Rivoting, and heartfelt all wrapped into one!
Miss Emily Wells has shaken my world to it's core from the first moment I saw her performance in the summer of 2010. Emily must never be labeled into one musical category. It would be a mistake to do such a thing. Emily is a highly trained violist from years of taking Suzuki-method violin lessons. I know all about these lessons. I'm a father of twin daughters who also took the same lessons. This method has the parent take the lesson with the child. Once you graduate from these lessons, joining a symphony or a quartet is the natural path however, playing in a symphony isnt for everyone, and certainly wasnt for miss Wells. She branched off to create her own music with the use of consolidating her wonderful violin techniques along with other instruments in a loop format. End result is gold! With her voice singing the most heartfelt lyrics you've ever heard, it'll have you "emotionally moved" like no other artist has, especially for someone as young as her. I rate this album a 10 out of 5 it's that good. My advice, go see Emily perform live. Trust me, your eyes will not leave her from the minute you see her do her thing. She sings like an angel.

fantastic album. wasn't expecting to like it as much as I do... kooky but accessible and often find myself happily humming her delightful melodies.
