Beautiful book!
I teach Social Studies and Thurgood Marshall was added to our "Heroes of Social Justice" list for 3rd Grade. This is a great book for that age. My kids liked the illustration and it had the perfect amount of text.

Amazing work by Jonah Winter and Bryan Collier
This book didn’t disappoint. My students learned a great deal more about the life of Thurgood Marshall than their textbook was able to offer them. I love the way this story is formatted and the artwork is to die for! Jonah Winter and Bryan Collier are two of my favorites.

Thurgood
This is one of my favorite picture book biographies that has been published this year. Thurgood Marshal was a man who did not let anything get in his way. He was determined to be the best in every aspect of his life. His goal as a lawyer was to right as many injustices as he could. His dedication to getting justice for others led him to become the first African American man to serve on the Supreme Court. Jonah Winter has written a well-researched biography about this amazing example of leadership. The text follows Thurgood throughout his life and shows readers several examples of how he made an impact on the world. The illustrations by Bryan Collier are nothing short of stunning. They are rich in texture and color. The back of the book has well-written authors note, as well as real photos of Thurgood. This is the kind of book that needs to be in every classroom. Every child should know who Thurgood Marshal is and what accomplished for the Civil Rights Movement.

Reminds me of the movie Harriet
Reading this book reminded me of how I felt while watching the recent movie about Harriet Tubman-proud of the person portrayed, but ashamed of how our country has treated many of its citizens. Younger readers who have a chance to read or be read this book, will get a very clear picture of how difficult life was for Black Americans not so long ago (and for many even today!). It's hard to imagine having the will and strength of character to stand up and fight through the courts as Thurgood did for so many years, and some of the more spirited youngsters will applaud his acts of civil (and not so civil) disobedience. The wonderful illustrations support visually what the text tells us. This is another extremely well done juvenile biography that deserves a place in as many school and public libraries as possible.
