## Overview

Karakuri: How to Make Mechanical Paper Models That Move is a bestselling, hands-on guide to crafting 14+ intricate paper automata using gears, cams, and levers. Featuring pull-out pages, full-color models, and detailed physics explanations, this book blends creativity with engineering fundamentals, making it a must-have for makers, educators, and anyone eager to bring paper to life.

## Description

Originally published in Japan, Karakuri is an introduction to the simple mechanisms, such as gears, cranks, cams, and levers, used to bring to life these amazing moving paper models or automata. Included are pull-out pages for you to use to construct your own moving models of the different types of gears. These models serve as the basis for designing your own karakuri or may just be admired on their own. Detailed explanations, accompanied by diagrams, explain the physics behind how karakuri move and operate, so you really learn about the properties of the different types of gears and cams. And to inspire you, also included are four fun, full-color karakuri models designed by the author, a well-known paper engineer. Printed on pull-out pages and easily assembled, the projects include a whimsical tea-serving robot, an amusing penguin perched on an iceberg and trying to fly, a delightful peek-a-boo-playing teddy bear, and a mesmerizing train that goes around on a track and through a tunnel! With complete directions, fourteen full-size models, and the science behind the craft revealed, Keisuke Saka's book is a unique introduction to an ancient art and a perfect gift for creative and imaginative minds.

Review: Lots of Fun - Full of fun. Provides the basics of mechanical paper craft. Would be great for teaching children some of the physics of motion. Has ten basic models and lots of examples of designs using these done by the author and even more by high school students. Excellent chapter on how this form of mechanics paper craft works.Interesting even if you don't make anything. Over half the book is made of pages to cut out and assemble. Lots of Fun.
Review: Should be Illegal it is so much fun! - I never expected to have this much fun! This is an amazing book, clearly written and illustrated. Too much fun to describe and much better than the other books I bought that do much of the same. There is so much information here as well as just having fun making all of the adorable projects and learning the names of types of gears and how machines work. A must buy if you want to learn about machines or just want to have fun making gears and shafts and such out of paper. I love it!
