Description

Product Description Wong Fei-Hong Meets Little Strudel by Edward Ratliff .com Once you get past the astonishing title to Edward Ratliff's Rhapsodalia's debut, prepare to be astonished anew at the music. For one, Ratliff plays a veritable arsenal of instruments: cornet, trumpet, euphonium, trombone, and accordion. Never mind how hard it is for a trumpeter to play trombone, Ratliff leaps in with violinist Sam Bardfield, saxist Michaël Attias, bassist John Hebert, and drummer phenom Kevin Norton. They kick up a heat that John Lurie's Lounge Lizards fans will love. The music is big, bright, and expansive. Ratliff's named the album in honor of the Honk Kong film industry, and while only the title track is Asian in derivation, the album has a globetrotting feel to it. The rhythms are precise and uptempo, with the violin offering tango flavoring, and Ratliff's and Attias's horns roughing the edges so that Wong Fei-Hong sounds like an eager hard bop album from '66 passed through a kaleidoscope. --Andrew Bartlett P.when('A').execute(function(A) { A.on('a:expander:toggle_description:toggle:collapse', function(data) { window.scroll(0, data.expander.$expander[0].offsetTop-100); }); }); Review "...colorful, stylistically eclectic and humor-filled... this is tightly arranged stuff..." -- Harvey Pekar, Jazz Times"...composer-brassmeister-accordionist Ratliff has fashioned a little quintet that sustains its tenderness and agility while still blowing like Vesuvius." -- Jim Macnie, Village Voice"Ratliff, meanwhile, who is the driving force behind Rhapsodalia, and Attias are outstanding soloists — as is Bardfeld... A great disc." -- Robert Spencer, Cadence About the Artist Rhapsodalia is led by composer and multi-instrumentalist Edward Ratliff ("a wonderfully spunky and imperturbable trumpet player"-- The New York Times) and features five of the most vital and versatile musicians in New York's downtown music scene. Based in New York City, Rhapsodalia performs at venues including the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Knitting Factory, and will appear at the 2000 Bell Atlantic Jazz Festival. Individually, the band members (Michael Attias, Sam Bardfeld, John Hebert, Kevin Norton, Edward Ratliff) have performed and recorded with a wide range of musicians including Anthony Braxton, Anthony Coleman, Eric Friedlander, Fred Frith, David Krakauer, Joe Lovano Roy Nathanson, Greg Osby and John Zorn. Band Members: Edward Ratliff (trumpet, trombone, euphonium and accordion) Michal Attias (alto and baritone saxophones) Sam Bardfeld (violin) John Hebert (bass) Kevin Norton (drums, vibraphone) See more

I simply wanted to add another vote in agreement with Misters Mortomer and Bartlett. This is a delightful album. I could spend some time trying to tell you what it sounds like. Sometimes like Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass (all slightly drunk) gone postmodern on us. A little like Piazolla. A little like klezmer. Mostly I think Ratliff et alia have come up with a lovely and original mix of styles. Lots of melody. Lots of rhythm shifting with some great drumming by Kevin Norton. I also like Michael Attias' saxophone work quite a bit. This music will not stop you dead in your tracks and make you all teary with the beauty of the world. That's fairly rare. But it is one man's honest musical vision, it is unique and it is very well done. That's pretty rare as well.
