Product Description The Critically acclaimed series Live From Austin, Texas is back with two more incredible performances on CD and three on DVD from the vaults of award winning TV show Austin City Limits. The legendary Willie Nelson sounds fantastic in his 1990 ACL performance which includes a couple of duets with Shelby Lynn. The Sir Douglas Quintet rocks the ACL audience in 1981 performing classics like She's about a Mover and 96 Tears Renowned country songwriter Billy Joe Shaver takes the ACL stage in 1984 with his magical songs. .com Few 1960s garage-band rockers enjoyed a more eclectic and enduring career than the late Doug Sahm. After his Sir Douglas Quintet recorded a string of hits, including "She's About a Mover" and "Mendocino," Sahm released both country and blues albums as a solo artist and subsequently formed the Texas Tornados as a Tex-Mex, Grammy-winning supergroup. This 1981 Quintet reunion performance, recorded for the Austin City Limits series (also available on DVD) finds Sahm and band touching all those musical bases, with Augie Meyers (also Sahm's partner in the Tornados) providing the signature, telegraph-key organ and Alvin Crow serving as a vocal and instrumental foil for Sahm. Highlights range from a cover of Charlie Pride's hit "(Is Anybody Goin' to) San Antone" in medley with Sahm's "Texas Tornado" to revivals from the '60s songbooks of the Kinks ("Who'll Be the Next in Line?"), ? and the Mysterians ("96 Tears"), and legendary Texas ravers the 13th Floor Elevators ("You're Gonna Miss Me"). Though Sahm introduces "Groover's Paradise" as the Austin version of the national anthem, it's "At the Crossroads" that should be. Throughout the performance, Sahm, band, and the Texas audience are all plainly having a ball. --Don McLeese

Sir Douglas Quintet ( Live From Austin Texas ( Dig ) )
I bought this DVD while it was still available. I like their music and also taped most of their stuff when it was aired on PBS. The Cds and DVDs have a much better quality than the recorded versions and the VCRs are being phased out so I still have back up of every thing until the Cds and DVDs are phased out.

Sir Doug Concert Good But Songs Too Short
This concert by Sir Doug in January 1981 has a good sound but is very lacking in guitar. It mostly consists of Augies organ and relies on nothing else. Alot of the Quintets best songs are =missing and it lacks hardly any of the Doug Sahm blues feelings. The songs in the concert were too short and at sometimes mingled together wich resulted in a lack of feeling and soul. The cd is ok--don't get me wrong. It is just that I expected a whole lot more--more rock and blues. Followers of this group shoud try ro get the 1994 cd Daydreaming at Midnight (out of print) which is one of the best albums this group ever made. Straight out rock and roll and blues. You need to get this one.

Excellent Tex-Mex from Sir Doug!
Recorded for the Austin City Limits televion show in 1981, this CD is an expanded edition of that show. Doug Sahm is joined by Augie Myers and original Quintet drummer John Perez, along with son Shawn Sahm on rhytm guitar, Speedy Sparks on bass, and Alvin Crow on guitar. This is just a fantastic CD for several reasons. For one thing, there aren't many available live releases by Doug Sahm or the Sir Douglas Quintet and this fills that void; they play the hits and more - including material from the out-of-print album "Border Wave," and this CD sounds fantastic! Doug and Augie and the rest of the band sound great and the tune selection from early hits "She's About a Mover" and Mendocino" to later songs like "San Antone" and "It Was Fun While It Lasted" is wonderful. It's not a reissue, so I don't know what to call it, but if you're a fan of roots rock and/or Doug Sahm you should get it. Let's hope more great music will come from the Austin City Limits vaults.

The Backyard Barbecue Test
Try this:1) Come to a peaceful point in your life where, at least for the moment, all is well with your world.2) Fire up the backyard grill and prepare some burgers, steaks, chops, whatever you want.3) Pour yourself a big drink (I recommend a margarita or a big ol' Dos Equis, something with a Tex-Mex flavor)4) While the fire is going, put on Live from Austin, Texas by the Sir Douglas Quintet5) If you're not in the best mood you've ever been in your life by the time "(Is Anybody Goin' To) San Antone" comes on, you may very well be dead.I promise you, by the time you get to "Ya No Llores," you will know the meaning of pure bliss.

Rock 'n' Roll Texas style
The SDQ were touring their Border Wave album when they pulled into their second home of Austin Tx for this live gig back in 1981. Produced by the legendary Craig Leon, Border Wave emphasised the punk elements in the SDQ sound and brought the band both critical and commercial success. Given that, I was both surprised and disappointed by the flat and lifeless feel of the first three tracks on Live from Austin TX. In fact, the third track, The Rains Came, one of their biggest hits, is awful. Over the years I have seen the Quintet be many things on stage, ranging from wonderful to shambolic, and everything in between. But lifeless? Never! However from track four onwards - the country-rocker Down on the Border - they really get in the groove and from there on the performances are electrifying. Track after track hits the spot and makes you wish you were there on the night. It is hard to pick particular standouts, but if pushed I'd go for Groovers Paradise, once virtually the SDQ theme-song, plus the searing version of the 13th Floor Elevators standard, You're Gonna Miss Me. Listening to the album right through reminds me of just how eclectic and musically diverse Doug Sahm was. I can't think of anyone else who would deliver a set-list that juxtaposed garage band classics (96 Tears) with tex-mex polkas (Chicano), not to mention country weepies (I keep wishing for you) with driving punk-rockers (Who'll Be the next in line)This is an album that all fans of Doug Sahm and the SDQ will want to have. Docked one star for the less-than-brilliant beginning, but well worth four stars overall for everything else that follows.
