Ice is powerful, and unless you are on a small pond you will have problems. If you want to mark a mooring, just tie some floating rope (polypropylene, not nylon) to your chain with enough slack to float on the surface. The ice will not catch the end of the rope and it will pull through during ice-out. **Q: Looking to purchase these as a gift. What size would I need for a 34 ft boat?** A: It would depend on the shape of the hull. My boat is 33 ft, and I use a size A2 near the stern and an A3 toward the bow. This arrangement works very well for the lock walls of the New York State canal system. Polyform's quality is second to none, and I have not had a single issue with my Polyform fenders and buoys since making the switch.
