Beware - NOT the same as other kits...
Just received this kit from Amazon and was honestly a bit shocked. First, to qualify myself, I recently rediscovered model rockets as an adult. It's much more fun when you have plenty of money to spend on any kit, motor, and accessory you could possibly want. Within the past year I built the Estes Big Daddy, Fletcher, Mega Mosquito, Crossfire, Red Max, Honest John, Vector Force, Star Stryker, Bull Pup 12D, Majestic, and 5-6 others. Got a little bored with 18 & 24mm engines so I built the Aerotech Mirage and Sumo. Also putting finishing touches on 2 LOC/Precision kits, so I've seen and built MANY MANY rocket kits. The first thing I noticed when I opened up this kit was that all of the tubes are very thin and light weight. They're waxed and smooth, but barely better quality than paper towel rolls. The fins have not been die or laser cut as most model rocket kit manufacturers do for you. You get a card stock stencil for cutting your own fins. The other thing pretty much every other manufacturer does is slot the tubes and extend the fins so they lock onto the engine mount. Not so here. Just gluing the fins to the outside of body tube is fine with smaller rockets, but with 24mm motors, this just isn't gonna be beefy enough. The boat tail is not pre-cut balsa or injection-molded plastic, but a rather flimsy piece of card stock you must cut out and glue together. The nosecone is your standard white plastic, but it's the wrong shape, so you need to cut out another piece of card stock and glue it on as an extension. The instructions then tell you to "paint" that extension with CA glue. This particular step is nigh impossible, even using the tip the instructions give you to soften up the paper by holding it over steaming hot water. This is like building a rocket from blue-prints. I suppose one could make the argument that this rocket is light weight and therefore capable of greater height. You could also argue that the challenge of making a rocket essentially from scratch will be very rewarding. Maybe you're an optimist. So is it flimsy crap or light weight and nimble? Is it unnecessarily difficult or satisfyingly challenging? I'll amend this review if/when I finish building this kit.Addendum - 5/29/15: Well, I suppose I was right... on both counts. I still feel like the manufacturer left a bit too much in the hands of the builder such that this requires a LOT more work to turn into something you could actually fly, but with all that extra work, it's safe to say it'll be one of my favorites when complete. The construction was as tricky as predicted and you can see in pics 1 & 2 all the tape, epoxy clay, hobbylite, sealer, and seemingly endless sanding that is going into this rocket. It's still a 3-star evaluation if for no other reason than the description on Amazon is woefully insufficient. This is a whole 'nother level of model rocket building. Will update again when complete.
