This product is both mesmerizing and addictive! The Pit and the Pendulum is so much more than an elegant desktop execu-toy (although it is that toy!) the Pit and Pendulum demonstrates real science. -- Secured in its oak stand, the all metal pendulum converts kinetic energy into potential energy. The extremely fine sand (included) provides minimal friction allowing the pendulum to swing for extended periods of time. As the pendulum swings it gently "writes" ever changing geometric patterns in the sand. The patterns get bigger then smaller then bigger again as the arc of the pendulum also changes. -- Comes with a stand with bowl-type base, bag of sand, and instructions. Grand Illusions' newly-designed large wood pit & pendulums are available in a natural wood finish pictured with gold plated metal parts, a black lacquer finish with chrome plated metal parts and a cherry finish with gold plated metal parts.

Fair Warning
This product is poor and does not function properly at all. The metal "U" bracket that is supposed to sit on top of the vertical arm is too narrow to sit properly. The spikes on it do not allow free swing of the pendulum. The vertical arm when attached is not centered over the pit. I have tried numerous spacers and spaced the base to tilt it to no avail.I had seen one of these that I believe was entirely metal made by the same company and it was incredible. This one sucks so bad it's embarrassing to have on display.

I could watch it for hours.
I have wanted one of these Pendulums for years. I tried to buy one last year around Christmas and they were all out of stock. So this year I thought ahead and looked earlier. It came quickly from Amazon and I followed the online video instructions on how to put it together and after a few attempts at getting the sand in the right spot and smoothed the right way I got it just about perfect. It makes beautiful patterns in the sand and is fascinating to watch. It is very relaxing watching the pendulum swing. I have discovered that if you put the whole thing on a turntable, such as a small (10in or so) Lazy Susan, that it draws in the sand like a Spirograph. It has made it even more enjoyable to use and watch. I have noticed that the humidity in the air changed the consistency of the sand making it look a little ruff and clumpy. When the sand arrived it was very smooth and fine. It is monsoon season here and I think when the humidity lessens in the air it will go back to normal, but it did change the way the patterns are drawn and look. I love my pendulum and highly recommend it. It would make a great gift for yourself or a loved one!
