Good, single-purpose tool
I've had this one for about a month now, and I can understand other folks comments on it, but I think there may have been some unrealistic expectations, as this is not a full size mandoline. If you're looking for a general purpose mandoline, then keep looking. This is a fixed pitch slicer, about 1/32" or maybe a little thicker, with a fairly small bed. It excels at slicing small items thinly and quickly. I was curious about how the ceramic blade would work, and the answer is that it's wicked sharp and works wonderfully. My main uses for it are for salads, as it has a convenient pair of slots to hook it on the salad bowl, and you can shave your ingredients in rapidly (in both directions) then toss-- what would have been 5 or 10 minutes to assemble a simple salad turns into 2 or 3 instead. However, it's also great for shaving vegetables in other dishes, and I also use it on firm, highly-connected meats like smoked porks for sandwiches or soffrittos. You can spend hundreds of dollars on a mandoline (and yes, I have a larger one for general use), but that isn't what this tool is. It's more a mini-mandoline to have at hand for when you want to quickly slice a cucumber; comparing it to a full size mandoline is like comparing a slicing knife to an electric slicer. You use a slicer for the roast, but you use a knife for the garlic. It's a great tool for what it does, and for under $20, it's a great addition to the long-tool drawer.[Still a workhorse, as another reviewer mentioned] I use this slicer constantly; I like to serve salads frequently with dinners, and for the crisp vegetables, I put it on the bowl and then quickly slice them in. Another use I've found is to use it to slice ham thinly for sandwiches; I didn't think it would work, but I tried it out and the resulting ham shavings in sandwiches got raves from the family. It's like a paring knife for me-- used a lot without really thinking about it any more.

Adjustable or double edged?
I originally decided to order the Adjustable slicer, but found the colors more attractive than the black. Unfortunately, I did not notice that that there are two quite different types of Kyocera Slicers. The ADJUSTABLE (black only) model has a fixed in place blade and a table (the end closest to the handle) that easily adjusts up and down to vary the thickness of the slice to 0.5 cm, 1.3 mm, 2.0 mm, or 3.0 mm, as shown in it's video. The other slicer, listed as DOUBLE-EDGED, (available in other colors) has a fixed in place place table and blade that cuts "double", as the food is moved over the blade away from the handle, and again as it moves back over the blade. It cuts in 1.5 mm thickness only, which is quite thin, IMO. I returned the fixed double-edged one and got the adjustable, which IMO is much more versatile. The video that is posted describing the difficulty of returning the food to the "starting position" is from 4 years ago, and I did not experience any catching on the return or non-cutting stroke.

Works we'll, but slices very thin
The blade is very shark and works well. Problem is slices are very thin. This is ok if you want very thin onion slices, etc. but as the blade I not adjustable, I find this to be a problem. Wish I'd realized how thin the slices would be.Be careful using this device. I used it without guard and sliced my finger!!

works well
I ordered this slicer to make potato/sweet potato chips in the dehydrator. I thought I ordered the adjustable slicer, but did not. So I tried it out on an apple and I must say, I'm impressed. The slices were thin enough to read through. It'll be perfect for my intended use, and then some. I do however have to agree with everybody else's assessment of the safety grip. It works okay as is, but could have been designed to be more user friendly. It's just too difficult to hold on to. A ball grip would definitely work better.

Cool kitchen accessory
I've used it a couple of times since I got it to slice onions paper-thin. I definetely like it. If purchasing again, I would get the one with the adjustable depth of cut to have more versitality, but for the price, ease of use and good quality of the device I like it. Easy to clean too. I have limited drawer space for gadgets, but this one will stay. I just need to find more applications for it -- get a little more creative.

Love mine, give as a gift too!
I was inspired to purchase this over a year ago by the beautiful raw salads at a local eatery - paper thin radishes and beets are so elegant but so hard to achieve! This slicer quickly became my go-to for fast fun fancy salad or garnish making. I LOVE the two sided blade (vs. the adjustable one with a one sided) because it allows you to so fast, almost too fast! Sharp!! I got gloves after almost immediately cutting myself.I recently left this at a friends house (yes, I travel with my favorite knife and this mandolin) - since it's a far drive I told him to enjoy the slicer and immediately ordered another.Btw, I have an expensive adjustable stainless mandolin, but it's been collecting dust for years. So huge, clunky and hard to clean. I'm contemplating the Kyocera set for adjustable widths and julienne. I know this trusty tool will remain my main work horse tho, that double-edge ceramic action cannot be beat!!!

Not great
The plastic holder is not very useful, so one needs to take care when slicing by hand. The slices are thin, but good for cucumbers and carrots so far (which is what I usually want to slice thinly). For the price it's okay. I'd love a similarly priced mandolin that has a usable holder, though.

Probably won't use it much
It's everything other reviewers have said as far as speed, sharpness and ease of use. I goofed though; I should have bought an adjustable one to adjust the thickness of the slices; this one only slices paper thin; even the cucumber slices are really too thin for salads, more like paper than cucumber.

Very useful item
Very very nice item that I have owned for a year at least and is a handy tool in the raw prep repertoire. I have not experienced any safety issues and find the guide to be helpful and safe, no need for metal chef glove.Produces a very fine cut and is non adjustable. Have used it on onions, red cabbage, bell peppers, salad onions and find it a fast and convenient alternative to the food processor slicing blade for small amounts, would be handy for travel as it is so light and takes up v little space.I did make the mistake of attempting to slice red cabbage using the whole head, the weight/pressure was too much and the handle snapped but Amazon were kind enough to replace it for me!

Very sharp and effective
This slicer is not adjustable, but does a great job of thinly slicing my veg. It is very sharp, so watch your fingers.

Preis-Leistung grenzwertig

its OK
OK but will only cut very thin slices not wide enough for some onions Wish I had bot the adjustable version. wider version probably would be better also
