Precise , comprehensive - a seminal book on the subject
Seldom would you come across a book that covers such a vast range of history with an immaculate precision and yet gives the reader a feeling of comprehension. Covering the post-Mughal period to post Independence, it dissects some of the key turning points of history viz. the battles of Plassey and Buxar, the loss of monopoly for the East India Company, the birth of nationalism, Gandhi's return and impact - to name a few. The average reader would be significantly enlightened by the nuanced handling of key pre-independence conflicts like partition, the Poona pact, and Bose's departure to the INA.The precision to be fair also makes this a difficult read as it is laced with cross-references to work by other authors, but this should be a must-read for each and every citizen of India and Pakistan to clear the air. Not for beginners
This book is very lengthy. The language is a bit advanced and not your typical course book. So, if you're an aspirant only read if you have a lot of time in hand.Packaging: no bubble wrap or any kind of box to save it from external damage. 1 star for packaging

Worthy of your Precious Time...
Won't recommend it as a first read, maybe Shekhar Bandhopadhyay's "From Plassey to Partition" will help in preparing an approach before coming to this book. An excellent & vivid description of various trends & strains in Nationalism & developments that led to Freedom. Has given due importance to developments about women as well as caste based indentity. Author seems bit more critical about so called Right in Congress & capitalists influence on INC. Overall a worthy book for your Precious Time & Efforts.

Excellent, but not for beginners!
This is a very nicely written book, but not the best for people who are new to the history of Modern India. This is also not recommended for those preparing for competitive exams. I would recommend this book to an undergraduate student. It is very helpful for academic reading. The page and print quality is commendable. All the maps are printed on glossy paper. Kudos to Amazon for prompt delivery!

Nice analysis of subaltern history
Although most of it is a copy of Shekhar Bandopadhyaya but few sections are really insightful like those on famines, women, caste, vernaculars. Can add to your history optional knowledge depth. Language is a bit technical.
