Value for money as a hobbyist engraver, but needs IT skills
Reviewing the stand-alone version: This is very good value for money as a hobbyist laser engraver, and great if you're wondering whether to spend more for a home business. It worked better than I expected on leather (photo) and wood, and dark paper. drawing text and lines is its forté, not so much images and area filling. The following aren't criticisms. more observations for potential buyers - it's slower than you might think from the videos (which are speeded-up); you need to be IT-confident to set it up (think similar to the setup of a network laser printer); you need extra drawing and plug-in software (freeware like Inkscape + some plug-ins if you don't have a Corel or Adobe Illustrator subscription); and 3-4 format conversion steps to get form an original drawing to the G-file the laser unit needs. And no way are you going to want to use it outside a controlled situation like a workshop or dedicated room at home (the café video is unrealistic). You also really do need to spend quite a lot of time testing the materials you're using and adjusting the speed/intensity settings of the unit - materials vary a lot in terms of how well they take to laser etching. If you're using it to etch wood, darker woods tend to etch better than lighter woods (in terms of both detail and speed of drawing). All that said, it's a great product and once you master the process of getting from a design into G-file format, and it does things you can't do any other way. As I said, great for home hobbyists, woodworkers and anyone who wants to give themselves another option in terms of creating graphics on solid materials.
