The Hiding Place

Wow!
The seller did a great job packaging and shipping my DVD. I saw this film with my grandmother when I was 7 years old and I've never forgotten it. This is a powerful story that obviously left an impression on my 7 year old self. I'm very happy I finally found a copy. Now, every time I watch it, I'll remember it was the first "real" movie my grammy took me to the theater to see.I highly recommend seeing this very powerful and poignant true story from a very tragic time in our world's history.

The true story of an authentic disciple of Jesus
I have seen this film many times over the years. I have even visited the Netherlands. Whenever I go there I always make sure to visit the house of Corrie Ten Boom. Her life has impacted me and my family beyond words. With all that is happening against the Jewish people in our day 2024, I pray that I like Corrie would be a light in dark places and stand with the Jewish people just as the entire Ten Boom family did.

Inspirational! Best Movie Ever!!
Oh, wow!! This movie is wonderful, inspirational, moving, and heart-stirring! Oh, and powerful - these are the best words to describe this superb movie. I ordered "The Hiding Place" DVD a couple days ago, and watched it last night with my family. I have read the book, and this DVD really brought Corrie's story to life. It is a wonderful production, filmed in Holland and other places in Europe, and you will in no doubt be anticipating what happens as this drama unfolds its striking scenes."The Hiding Place" begins with Holland under German occupation, and it brings you to the Christian Ten Boom family, the father actually a watchmaker. Corrie (Jeanette Cliff), who was the first licensed woman watchmaker in Holland, and her sister, Betsie (Julie Harris), get involved in the underground, helping the Jews. A secret hiding place is built by a certain Mr. Smit, and the Ten Boom family holds "raids" to practice in case the Gestapo comes. But the time it takes for them to get to the secret room and put everything back in order is too long. They must get better. They are instructed by the man who built the secret room to turn mattresses (so that the Gestapo would not feel a warm spot on the bed), empty trashes and ash trays, and put everything back so that it looks like it is just an elderly father living there with his two daughters. The scene comes when Corrie is summoned from her watch making work to help a man, and after saying she'd get him the money he needed, Corrie took to her room because of illness. But it is a trap, and the Gestapo comes and captures Corrie and Betsie and their family. I was sitting on the edge of my seat here! Corrie and Betsie are eventually taken to Ravensbruck, a dreaded extermination camp in Germany, where their faith is sorely tested (nakedness, illness, hunger, thirst, hard work, etc.). Christ's love radiates from Betsie's heart, as they tell their fellow prisoners about Jesus. The living conditions at this camp are horrible, and the movie portrays them very realistically and you cannot help but be moved; you feel as though you are actually there. God's love continually helps them, even though they do not understand all the reasons why they are here, suffering so. I must admit I went through several tissues (by the way, I recommend having a box nearby - I couldn't help but to cry), so moving was this movie, as I saw how they and Betsie suffered so. I cannot recommend this movie highly enough, and God's love and forgiveness shines forth in this beautiful film that will inspire generations to come. The actual Corrie Ten Boom gets on at the end of the movie after Corrie is released from Ravensbruck, the latter leaving her fellow prisoners with the words, "God be with you!" Betsie's last words still ring in my ears, "We must go everywhere. We must tell people that no pit is so deep that He is not deeper still. They will believe us, because we were here." What they suffered, we will never fully realize. I will never tire of this glorious production. The actors and actresses did a wonderful job with their roles; Julie Harris played the part of Betsie with striking skill, and Jeanette Cliff did AWESOME with playing Corrie. I give a hearty applaud to them, and everyone else who partook in this film. This movie is the true story of Corrie Ten Boom and her family. It is a story that will never cease to inspire me. It is a story that shows how awful humans can be to other human beings and it echo's God's forgiveness. I do believe that those who have read the book will enjoy the movie better than those who haven't, but this movie is for everyone. We can all learn something from "The Hiding Place". I thank God for this movie and may God continue to bless it.I hope my review has been helpful to you. May God, whom Corrie and Betsie and their family served, bless you!-P. Charles

War
The true story is history, heartbreaking, while uplifting. The true story of the Ten Boom family. While one country's inhumanity is beyond belief for most of us to understand, this family shows a loving, caring, sacrificing family willing to sacrifice everything for the love for their fellow man. The quality of the video is poor, the quality of the story is excellent.

Grateful this movie was made
Anyone who has ever heard of Corrie ten Boom can appreciate seeing her story in movie form. What I love about this movie is that it is realistic enough to teach people about some of the horrors of the Holocaust while being appropriate to show teens with so many ideas for excellent discussion afterwards.

Make sure you get the right DVD!
For some reason, Amazon seems to show a VHS picture and incorrectly list as 1.33:1 (non-widescreen) for the WESSCOTT MARKETING DVD. This is not correct. I own the Wesscott DVD and it is both remastered and in widescreen. It also comes with a 2nd DVD of great bonus material including a 1-hour "behind the scenes" extra, which despite its name is really mostly additional backstory to the events shown in the movie (which even uses numerous scenes that were not in the actual film), as well as several shows that were done with Corrie in her later years that are really neat to see (she was an interesting lady that clearly loved the Lord). I recommend this version over the Billy Graham DVD release and especially over the VHS. The remastering was fairly decent for such an old film too. Just to clear up any confusion, the UPC # of the Wesscott DVD I have is 731635002106.As for the movie itself:Produced in 1975, this is a GREAT movie that is well worth a watch. This movie showcases in clear visual terms what it means to put your Christian faith into action and to trust God even when times look very very dark.If you don't know Corrie ten Boom's story, it is one not to miss and this movie is an excellent place to start. I don't want to give away too much from the movie, but Corrie's faith (and indeed the entire family's faith) is certainly tested in very significant ways. I think most of us, even though we know that horrible horrible things happened at the hand of the Nazis, find it easy to forget just how horribly evil that evil can be. This film, though definitely sanitized, once again reminds us of the evil that lurks within men's hearts (often behind-the-scenes, just waiting for an opportunity to burst out). For those with children, you do need to know that this is an intense film due to its subject matter and deaths do occur in the movie. I would say probably 11/12ish is probably the youngest appropriate age. There's plenty of great family discussion topics that can be gleaned from this movie.Like a number of other Christian movies, this movie does have a reasonably strong undercurrent that whatever God allows in our lives must be His will for us (because the logic dictates that if it wasn't His will, He wouldn't allow it to happen). I'm much less inclined towards that view these days as I see a distinction between God allowing something (i.e. not stepping in to change what humans or the devil is doing) and God's actual desire for us. I believe God can WANT *NO* Nazi concentration camps with hurt and suffering (i.e. that be His will) and yet, allow the course of events to play out. If God always interceded in our affairs according to His will, it would be Heaven on Earth now and our choices as humans would be of no effect. There's definitely a mystery to it all. But this movie, mirroring the thoughts of many Christians, does have that undercurrent that if we experience pain and suffering, then it must be because God wants us to experience it. With that said, this movie does showcase what tough faith looks like even when you don't understand the "why" and ultimately we see how God uses all that happened even to reach many through the telling of Corrie's story. This is definitely a worthwhile movie.Chris LongMoviesForChristians Movie Reviewslaughandlift dot com/moviesforchristians

See the other side of the coin if you've never been involved in war.
Highly recommended. We, as a family of 9 went through WW2. I was only a child but to remember much of the horror. I also have met Corrie TenBoom in later years. This is an awesome movie of a true story of the courageous deeds of the TenBoom family. They suffered the consequences of betrayal and were taken to the concentration camp. Corrie was the only one coming out alive, you may say through a miracle. Their courage, faith in God and love for others is to be admired.
