The last rain gauge was a free give away and it too was plastic and lasted 8 years. Terrible product **Q: If you mount it on a fence, how do you empty it?** A: Two screws in the fence mount the gauge. There are slotted holes on the gauge that allow you to simply slip it off the mounting screws to empty the water. Then slip back in place. Easy to use and to mount. **Q: Are the screws included?** A: Screws are not included. **Q: Why is the 1 inch mark 2 inches from the bottom? The scale is 2 times as large as the measurements there (e.g., 5 in. is actually 10 in. with a ruler)** A: Hello Jenny, Although the gauges may look like they are measuring the collected rain in columns of water measured by height in inches, in reality, they are calibrated to collect the rain that falls on an area of one square inch of soil and then display the reading as a column of water that is one inch tall and one square inch in area. In other words, the calibration marks are supposed to represent water columns that are in cubic inch volumes -- not necessarily as water depth in inches.
