Product description 16 songs .com What a bizarre concept. Let's get together a whole slew of folkies who, for some inexplicable reason, loved the soundtrack for the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar and rerecord all the songs. Why? To satisfy some childhood obsession, it seems. This has to be the least relevant album of all time. Perhaps if those involved reinterpreted the opera, updated it, gave it some kind of new light or understanding. But that doesn't happen--the versions here offer nothing over the original. Remarkably, this is even worse than the soundtrack to the movie version, which featured the annoying vocals of Ted Neely as Jesus. How do you top that? How about enlisting Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls to play Jesus? Sheesh. --Tod Nelson

I loved it, I played it over and over
In 1994 my mom who had always been a huge JCS fan, saw this album in the store and bought it. I was in my junior year in high school and remember the first time she played it. It was my first exposure to JCS. I loved it, I played it over and over. Suddenly I was as big a fan as my mom. I have since listened to many other versions, but since this was my first it will always remain one of my favorites.

Good in parts, but deeply flawed
Musically, this is excellent. The rock arrangement is great, with some excellent 'crunchy' guitar. Emily and Amy (aka The Indigo Girls) are excellent, as you'd imagine, although Amy's Country & Western vocal stylings as Jesus are a bit odd and out-of-sync with the rest of the piece, and Emily is wasted as Mary Magdalene (she should have played Judas at the very least, and alternately probably would have been a better Jesus than Amy). The other vocals are a mess, and where overall enjoyment of this evaporates. Some are fine, some are absolutely awful and are jarring enough that you find yourself cringing as you listen. Overall, this comes off as a collection of songs and not a continuous story, which as a musical it needs to be.

Love the concept
I'm a big JCS fan from my childhood, when we'd listen to the Original Cast album every Easter. I heard this CD being played in a store one day and recognized the voices of some of the characters as being familiar...but couldn't place them. When the cashier told me it was Amy and Emily---the Indigo Girls---I was hearing, I fairly raced back up to my office and ordered it.Amy Ray has always been the power voice of Indigo Girls, and as Jesus she makes a great impression. She would also have been very good as Judas I think. Emily, the "softer" sound of the duo, seems ideal for Mary Magdalene, but I was disappointed to find that her normally strong voice seems weak or diminished on this CD. Is this perhaps because of the conditions of the recording itself? I don't know. But she comes off too quiet and almost raspy and is sometimes difficult to even hear. The other artists on the CD are tolerable, and the music is, as always, incredible. I think any fans of Indigo Girls or the other artists on this album might enjoy this CD if they are also fans of the musical. It's quite a novelty.

Great album; I'd recommend it
Purchased this as a gift for a young friend. The album includes performances by several Georgia musicians, including one who was a friend, who is no longer with us. It's a nice rendering of the play, but it has sentimental value to me, as well, and we hope to share our enjoyment of these musicians with another generation by sharing it. I would definitely recommend to others.

cautionary note
I must preface this review by noting I was not much of a indigo girls fan before I bought this album. However, my sense was that they were only on a bit of the album, and that I didn't actually despise them necessarily.I am so dissapointed that I spent money on this. The performances are quite weak. I don't think any of the people here have ever played the characters in the Webber/Rice musical - for the most part, they project very little personality. I can't say much for the raw (especially vocal) skills of the performers, either.Based on the other reviews, I thought I'd be getting a hip, reinvigorated, cutting edge verison of JCS. Instead I have this drab thing that drags on at a slow pace with warbling, unprofessional singing. Coming from the perspective of someone who just wanted a great version of the musical, and not an Indigo Girls daydream power-trip project, this is extremely dissapointing. The few moments of redeeming power do not make up for the overall weakness of this recording. The performances are just unbelievably uninspired; I think none of the people really got emotionally involved with the characters they were singing for, and were too immersed in their own pop star or guitar-solo egos.On the positive side, it is difficult for anyone to ruin the best songs Webber and Rice wrote for this; Damned for All Time is decent, among one or two other passble renditions.

Excellent, New, Take on This Classic
This cd breathes new life into this fabulous musical. Certainly, the original Broadway recording is the definitive version of this production. But, I'd recommend this 1994 cd over the movie cd for a second, very different, take on the music. To be clear, not only is it a different take, but it is also very well done.
