As Yggdrasil Trembles

I have been following Unleashed on-again-off-again since Where No Life Dwells (Album #1). This is album is far stronger than many of the more recent offerings. Yggdrasil moves with the same speed and urgency of the earliest Unleashed albums; capitalizing on the dueling "galloping" guitar harmonies that characterize Unleashed when they are at the top of their form. Highly recommended, both for long time fans of Unleashed but also for folks into uncompromising death metal.

A lovely mix of talented song-writing and surprisingly technical playing for an old-school death metal band, primarily known for their galloping riffs. Evil Dead cover is pretty wicked as well.

Hailing from the depths of Sweden's rich and prosperous metal community, Unleashed have been releasing quality no filler Viking Death Metal since  Where No Life Dwells  hit shelves in 1991. Though even after a so far twenty year dominance and playing tours with some very big names in the Metal community Unleashed remains fairly unappreciated and ultimately unknown by the larger portion of metal fans world wide. Truly a shame as these gents define the saying "sticking to your roots" and have polished, mastered and enslaved their groovy yet brutal style of Death Metal.Like most of the genre Unleashed favors the guitars and on As Yggdrasil Trembles guitarists Fredrik Folkare and Thomas Olsson steal the show. Utilizing captivating riffs that are both memorable and brutal as hell the music makes you want to grip up a sword and charge into battle. The leads are insanely above average such as the lengthy and face melting solo on the title track or the chaotic tapping heard on the eighth track "Return Fire". It all equals out to a sound not unlike that done by Amon Amarth, Viking Metal but without all the 'epic' or 'moody' filler of more flamboyant bands.Founding member and skin man Anders Schultz puts down some quality beats and as usual keeps those double bass pedals well oiled on AYT. Through out the album Anders truly shows his years of experience and mastering of the drums with subtle but technical fills. On one track "Wir Kapitulieren Niemals" we find him letting loose and decimating his gear starting around the half way point of the track. All around an excellent example of Death Metal drumming at it's best by a seasoned vet of the art.Johnny Hedlund the man whom brought these minds together to create this monster again calls upon the wrath within himself to deliver some truly guttural and powerful tones. As usual his Bass work goes for the most part unnoticed as the overpowering guitars demand attention however what you hear is quality, tight and as usual on point. The vocals are simple and to the point but therein lies this man's charm, he gets to his point and allows the music to speak for itself. Occasionally we hear his tone raise to a mid tone scream and there are a few parts where he uses vocal effects to accent the given track's mood but for the most part he sticks with his traditional deep growl.I am sure you already know my opinion of this album and as you have guessed I am extremely pleased with the finished product. These guys haven't broken new ground or changed my life with their music however they have given me faith in the music I love, that there are bands out there that intend to stay the course and hold true to the music rather then downgrade to rake in new fans. Unleashed are a group that deserves respect from the Metal community and the fan base less talented, more popular bands enjoy.All in all I can honestly say that As Yggdrasil Trembles is at the very top of my favorite releases of 2010 thus far. I highly recommend this album to ALL fans of Heavy Metal, regardless of your preferred genre. El CD que mandaron no coincide a la descripción del producto donde en las imágenes se puede ver claramente el código NB 2481-2 manufactured and distributed by Nuclear Blast GmbH. El disco que recibí en realidad es la edición SR0544 made in Mexico under license to scarecrow records. No parece una mala edición, pero no es lo que esperaba.Sobre la música del álbum y la banda en general no tengo quejas, lo recomiendo bastante.

Bis vor einigen Jahren konnte man alle Scheiben der Elchtod-Veteranen UNLEASHED immer in der Kategorie "Kennste eine - kennste alle" einordnen. Das die Zeiten mittlerweile jedoch längst passé sind, ist in Metal-Kreisen natürlich kein Geheimnis mehr. Denn spätestens nach ihrer Death Metal-Glanztat "Sworn allegiance" (2005) gehen die Stockholmer von Album zu Album immer vielseitiger zu Werke, und legen dabei ein großes Augenmerk auf musikalische Abwechslung.Daher ist es auch keinesfalls überraschend, dass UNLEASHED mit ihren neuen Langeisen "As yggdrasil trembles" ihr bisher reifstes Werk vorlegen. Vor allem in Punkto Gitarrenarbeit fällt sofort auf, dass das Schweden-Quartett erneut einen gehörigen Sprung nach vorne gemacht hat, was sich an der Vielzahl der herausragenden, blitzeblanken Soli wiederspiegelt. Dadurch werden die jeweiligen Songs zusätzlich aufgewertet und bekommen fast schon einen "edlen Touch". Es ist richtig erfrischend anzuhören, wie viel sich die beiden UNLEASHED-Sechssaiter mittlerweile zutrauen. Gleiches gilt allgemein auch für die Songstrukturen, die auf ""As yggdrasil trembles" viel variabler sind, als man es von alten Band-Klassikern wie "Shadows in the deep" oder "Across the open sea" gewohnt war. Die neuen 12 Songs brillieren dabei durch vor allem durch die ausgewogene Mischung aus Mid-Tempo, fiesem Geschredder und bandtypischen Stampfern, so dass zu keiner Zeit Langeweile aufkommt. Hier und da wurde zusätzlich an musikalischen Kleindetails gearbeitet (z.B. Akustik-Gitarren, Harmonien), so dass bei einigen Songs zeitweise richtig atmosphärische Parts zum Tragen kommen. Feine Sache !!!All dies soll aber natürlich nicht darüber hinwegtäuschen, dass "As yggdrasil trembles" in erster Linie eine beinharte Scheibe in bester UNLEASHED-Tradition geworden ist, die auch keinen einzigen Die-hard-Fan enttäuschen wird. Der musikalische Spagat zwischen Tradition und Weiterentwicklung ist den Herren Hedlund & Co. somit aller bestens geglückt.So bieten brandneue Granaten wie "Yahwe and the chosen ones" , "Chief einherjar" , "This time we fight" , "Cannibalistic epedemic continues" , "Courage today, victory tomorrow" oder "Wir kapitulieren niemals" (mit deutschem Refrain!) reinrassigen Schwedentod der Spitzenklasse, der jeden eingefleischten Headbanger bereits frühzeitig im Dreieck springen lässt. Mit dem rasenden "Return fire" geht die Band tempomäßig sogar noch einen Schritt weiter, und legt eines ihrer schnellsten Stücke überhaupt ab. Die drei bitterbösen Attacken "Master of the ancient art" , "Dead to me" und "Far beyond hell" (großartiger Chorus!) leben dafür von ihrer unheilvollen Atmosphäre, die den Hörer automatisch in die tiefsten Verließe der Hölle katapultiert. Tja, und mit dem unglaublich tighten Titelstück "As yggdrasil trembles" hauen UNLEASHED mal eben einen der geilsten Viking/Death-Songs aller Zeiten raus, der die Langbärte von AMON AMARTH fast schon wie kleine Nachhilfeschüler aussehen lässt. Nur noch geil !!! Und wenn man an diesem 12-Tracker überhaupt eine Schwachstelle finden möchte, dann vielleicht der minimale "Mangel", dass diesmal kein einprägsamer Mitgröhl-Überhit im Stile von "The immortals" oder "The longships are coming" vertreten ist. Aber wer hätte den auch unbedingt gebraucht ?!?Die martialischen Battle-Lyrics sind dabei natürlich wieder mal Geschmacksache. Ich persönlich muss immer wieder schmunzeln, dass Text-Vokabeln wie "war" , "blood" , "sword" , "fire" , "hammer" , "brothers" oder "victory" dabei immer sooo inflationär benutzt werden. Aber nun ja, dies war bei UNLEASHED schließlich schon immer der Fall...und gehört zum Erfolgsrezept der vier Stockholmer längst schon zum guten Ton.Fazit: "As yggdrasil trembles" ist ein großartiges Album geworden, dem man sich als beinharter Death Metal-Fan unmöglich entziehen kann. Diese Band hat ihre Fans noch nie enttäuscht - und das hat sich auch im Jahre 2010 erwartungsgemäß nicht geändert.Und überhaupt: UNLEASHED gehen immer !!!

Seit die erste Unleashed CD in meine Ohren Drang,hab ich jedes ihrer Werke verschlungen. Diese neue Cd ist wohl ihre ungewöhnlichste,was die Kompositionen anbelangt.Wer jedoch offen für neue Strukturen ist,wird die neue CD schnell ins dunkle DeathMetal Herz schließen. Und nachden ersten drei Songs ist der Spuk dann ja auch vorbei und es wird wieder in guter alter Manier drauflosgehackt.Das Digipak ist wunderschön gestaltet.Erinnert mich eher an eine Ritual/Ambient Band aus dem Hause COLD MEAT INDUSTRY.Die Produktion (Sound) lässt jedoch keinen zweifel aufkommen-hier hacken die Götter aus Stockholm!!!Sogar ein kleiner Funke Öko-Bewusstsein hat sich in die Texte eingeschlichen,aber das ist bei Death Metal hin und wieder mal der Fall und unbedingt begrüssenswert.Als kleines Gimmick besonders für deutsche Fans von Unleashed,ist sogar ein deutscher Titel vertreten:" Wir kapitulieren niemals"Ich war etwas verwundert,aber Johnnys Aussprache im Song ist sehr deutlich:"was andere sagen,ist uns scheißegal-wir kapitulieren niemals!" Jawoll,kann ich da nur zufügen!!! 5 Sterne für so eine feine Death Metal Granate!!!!

Ah, death metal. One of my favourite metal subgenres. I like this album! A lot! The guitars combined brutality with beautiful melodies in the whole album, . The vocals do feel like a little lighter considering they play death metal, but were still heavy. I like the way the band makes use of the low E string and D string riffs. The intro riff of Return Fire and the synchronized bass drumming still amaze me. The lyrical content is very well thought out; you can tell the band knows the world, and the way they put their music in words I think is creative and astounding, not to mention intelligent. This album is for death metal fans. I give it a 5.

The more i listen to the Unleashed the more i think they are under rated, if you like Motorhead then this is for you, it's heavy but listenable if these had been an American band with mega bucks promoting them then they would be massive,but saying that i like the Unleashed the way they are an uncomplicated, straight to the point metal band.
