Nice companion book but nothing new...
I purchased this book along after watching the documentary Montage of Heck. I expected it to have new content that was left out of the documentary but was sort of disappointed when I found it was mostly just a summary of the documentary and the new content was limited to about 5% (if that). I also didn't read the dimensions before purchasing and the book was a little smaller than I would have liked. What I did like about the book is it was organized very well and the quality of the pages (photographs, illustrations, excerpts from Kurt's personal journals) was excellent. I also really appreciated the author's foreword.I really only want this review to be a review of the product itself and not so much the content as the documentary was heavily publicized and if you are here looking at the book, there's a very high chance you got here because you watched the documentary or know enough/have been exposed enough to Nirvana/Kurt that you already have your own opinion anyway. To summarize, this book is a nice companion if you were a fan of the docu and have the cash to spend, otherwise don't expect a ton of new content or other revelatory information.

Great Book For Both Fans Of Kurt Cobain And Nirvana!
Here's an inside look at the life of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. Never before seen pictures of his childhood and adolescence, family photos, illustrations of his work and illustrated drawings depicting his early musical ambitions and high school period in Washington state. There are also reflections from family members, bandmates, ex-girlfriends and whoever else associated with Kurt including wife Courtney Love. This book is a great companion to the documentary of the same title which is plenty for me apart from the CD of the home recordings. Deeply recommended for any fan Kurt and/or Nirvana.

It's nice to have some of Kurt's artwork printed in a ...
This book is smaller than I was hoping, dimensions-wise. The text contains an "oral history" style chop-up of the interviews given by the seven people in Montage of Heck (Cobain's mother, sister, father and stepmother, plus early girlfriend Tracy, bandmember Krist Novoselic, and wife Courtney Love), plus a introductory forward by Brett Morgen, the film's director. With the exception of a few photos, all of the images in this book are culled from Montage of Heck; there's not much unreleased stuff. It's nice to have some of Kurt's artwork printed in a book, but a substantial amount of the images in this book are also animation stills that are either an artist's interpretation of Kurt, or adaptions of Kurt's artwork. I was hoping for more of a coffee-table style book dedicated to his artwork and unreleased journal entries, but this is a nice companion to the film nonetheless. Honestly there's not much revelatory in the interviews. Mainly we see how little the people supposedly closest to Kurt knew him: a lot of what they say contradicts each other. I'd suggest this book for diehard fans of Kurt, but it's not as nicely presented as the documentary itself is.

I haven't watched Montage of Heck documentary. But I am glad I found this book. It was good to read the interviews. I hope I get to see the documentary someday.
