It's a beautiful magazine that I read cover-to-cover as soon as it arrives in the mail. It's kind of expensive (about $7 a copy) but well worth it for the amateur historian looking to get exposure to lots of history topics.One thing to make clear up front is that it is very English-focused. Not British-focused, or Europe-focused, or world-focused. I'm quite interested in English history, so that works very well for me, but if you're not really into English history, despite the mag's efforts to cover a broad range of world topics, it's probably not going to be of great interest.The other criticism I have is that it's a bit ... fluffy. Even the feature articles are very short; nothing is ever covered in sufficient depth for a true history enthusiast. A recent article on women in Anglo-Saxon times barely scratched the surface of the topic, and defaulted to inane politically-correct themes instead of really digging in to that fascinating subject. The mag's coverage of the Richard III skeleton discovery and its implications was brief and feeble. On the other hand, the brief articles do at least pique your interest and give you things to go read more about and research on the web. And maybe lack of depth is an unfair criticism of a monthly magazine; it is, after all, not a quarterly academic journal. The writing is good, and there are lots of cool pictures and graphics to keep things interesting.Despite those criticisms, as noted above, it's actually the only magazine to which I subscribe, and each month I wait for it to get here so I can dig in. I'll give it the five stars, although I wish they would have one or two major articles each month that got double or triple the word-count currently given to the feature stories. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great history *by S***R on Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2022* So many great articles, I even like the book reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Worth the purchase *by S***N on Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2017* Great magazine to purchase to learn more on English and European history. This magazine would work great for the child-adolescent in the age 12-18 range or even for the middle age adult like myself. All articles in the magazine are scrutable with a depth of information on English history and other articles on European history and British culture in general to well round out this magazine. Its nice to also work on the crossword puzzle in the back of the zine. The only caveat would be as I mentioned that the magazine is mostly focused on English, European history and British culture. It isn't a problem with me, since I'm an Anglophile and love English history and culture. In addition another caveat would be this mag ships out from Bristol, England so you will be waiting some time to receive the next issue. So you should have forbearance in waiting for the next edition to come in the mail.
