Backyard Boys Woodworking BBW26 Large Platform Feeder

I wanted a ground feeder for a couple a mourning doves I spotted eating the dropped seeds from my hanging bird feeders. So I purchased this feeder and added some dove & quail seed mix. Honestly, it took about 4 days but they finally found it and now the doves return daily to feed at it! The design is very simple and I do get the feeling after heavy usage and the rain beating on it, it may fail at some point where one of the legs may fall off. But I have been using this feeder now for about 2 months and its holding up just fine. I also have house sparrows & just yesterday some pigeons that fly down to this feeder and eat at it. I would deffinatly recommend this ground feeder to anyone looking for a reasonably priced ground feeder to attract mourning doves, house sparrows or pigeons if you so choose, because I can honestly say that this feeder has attracted those three types for me at and I hope to attract more.

This isn't a bad feeder, but it's not assembled with enough strength for weather conditions. It's only assembled with long staples which do nothing to hold it together for any length of time out in the weather. My advice, if you purchase this, is to pull it apart, remove their silly staples, and reassemble it using a good quality weatherproof wood glue or construction adhesive with bar clamps until the adhesive cures. If so, it makes for an attractive and durable feeder that won't fall apart.

Just what I wanted, they hold a lot of seed and the birds are loving them... also the rabbit, he jumps up and sits in it and munches the seeds. My main reason for getting them is to make a "cleaner" bird feeding area, and that seems to be working out. I like the tray, the water drains out of the seeds. They are a bit less sturdy than I would have hoped. Seem to be tacked together with just craft nails, some small wood screws instead would really make a difference. I wanted to push the legs down a bit into wet ground, just so that it was anchored but also straight (uneven ground) and I almost broke it just with slight pressure. But it was more my fault for not paying attention and being careful. I plan to get some wood glue to firm the seams up.

The design of this is great as it lets the water drain away and keeps the seeds from rotting but if you are looking for something super durable I would suggest you put screws in the legs because they are just stapled on and one came off as soon as I took it out of the box. Make sure you pre-drill your holes though as it is soft wood and will split easily.

This feeder is great for ground birds like mourning doves. The wild doves in my backyard seem to enjoy digging through the dove mix I put in it. It also keeps the dove mix dry, so there is no problem with mold. Protecting the health of your birds is paramount in choosing a feeder. This feeder is simple and well built. I expect it to give me years of service, and since I bought 2 at once, I have a spare for when (if ever) this one needs to be replaced.

Birds like it. If I could have found the metal for the bottom I could have made them cheaper and bigger.Buy them if U want ground feeding birds and are not handy.

I just received my second one and it is awesome. I ordered the first feeder in Dec. 2012 and decided to get another because it gets a lot of traffic. We get squirrels,deer,woodpeckers, birds,groundhogs,rabbits and chipmunks. Recently we had a mini flash flood in the woods were I placed it. It was swept away and I thought for good. When I found it a few days later in a pile of branches/debris it was like new. I was happily surprised. I had ordered another in the meantime because I really thought that the other was long gone. I figured if I found it eventually then having 2 would be even better. The construction of these ground feeders are exceptional. The metal tray is powder coated and does not rust. It stays really clean. It has held up to rain ,very high winds,cold,snow and being pounded in a high velocity of water current for days. The price cannot be beat!! The holes in the perforated bottom of these platform feeders are too large. Any small seeds (like millet) fall right through these holes. I know there have to be holes in the bottom so water doesn't accumulate. But a smaller perforation would increase the range of birds that could feed from it. This fact and the fact that the manufacturer continues to staple the pieces together instead of using screws is the reason for my less than satisfied rating.
