The Night Offices: Prayers for the Hours from Sunset to Sunrise

A wonderful prayer resource, BUT.....
I have had The Night Offices now for a few weeks and have utilized it intermittently. It is indeed a wonderful resource for one's personal prayer life. I have used it in conjunction with praying the Daily Office in the Book of Common Prayer. I have two criticisms, however. The first is that the print is a bit too small for me. Secondly, I feel that these offices, as beautiful as they are, are too short. The psalms which are used could have been expanded to their full length, or at least included more than the often too few verses that are included. Likewise for the readings. Nevertheless, even with these criticisms I feel that The Night Offices is certainly a worthwhile purchase for someone who wishes to enhance their prayer life.

Really good!
I know some other reviewers mention it doesn't really follow the bcp, but it is still a really great collection to have in your library. The readings, morning, noon, night, and compline are short enough so that even the busies people can make time to pray.My only complaint is the language, I would have liked to have seen a more inclusive text, especially in some areas where it would have really been helpful. I think Mrs. Tickle would have a better following if the language was updated. It is this way in all 4 of her books (Divine Hours - 3 books, and then the Evening Prayers). If you are sensitive to the male dominated text of the bcp, you probably will not like this.

a Dead Person who continues to speak
A welcome companion for old age when the hour of the night can be long because darkness of spirit can be so difficult to dispel along. These offices are the spaces where โthe work gets doneโ, the work of bringing every thought captive to Christ Jesus. When one is awake anyway this book is a useful too โfor smashing warped philosophies, tearing down barriers erected against the truth of God, fitting every loose thought and emotion and impulse into the structure of life shaped by Christ.โ 2 Corinthians 10:5 MSG. Phyllis had an incredible mind and thoughtfully made Night Offices (and several others) so that being dead she still speaks.

An excellent nighttime prayer resource
I admit that I am a fan of Phyllis Tickle. I own her 3-volume set, The Divine Hours, and it is one of the finest multi-volume prayer books available. Her newest book, The Night Offices, follows in the same tradition of her earlier work. Excellently bound and inclusive of a single, sewn-in marker ribbon, this volume proudly joins the others in her series.Notwithstanding its subtitle, "Prayers for the Hours from Sunset to Sunrise," this volume covers three "offices" -- The Office of Midnight (10:30 PM to 1:30 AM); The Office of the Night Watch (1:30 to 4:30 AM); and, The Office of Dawn (4:30 to 7:30 AM). If you like The Divine Hours, you'll want to get this volume to complete the set.

Beautiful prayers, perfect for reflection at night.
I currently work as a night-shift hotel clerk. The liturgies Phyllis Tickle has assembled from traditional sources in this volume feel special because they are uniquely designed to be prayed during the very hours I am active. They are beautiful in their reflection and often refocus my mind and spirit in the dark hours of the night and offer me a vehicle for praying for the world around me as it sleeps.

In need of formatting
I love Phyllis Tickle's Divine Hours books, and when I bought the summertime volume for Kindle, I knew I'd found the perfect format to carry with me when I travel. However, I was disappointed by the formatting for this version. It is harder to use the Table of Contents to move to the correct day, and some of the text was in a smaller font than the rest, requiring me to rotate the contents, which was distracting in the midst of prayer. The book itself deserves 5 stars; the Kindle version only 3.

For the Wee Small Hrs
For those night owls who want a way to wind down the wee hours with words of comfort and grace, knowing there are others lying in the dark f knight whispering the same prayers.

I am one of those people who have interrupted sleep patterns throughout the night. I use Phyllis Tickle's "Night Offices" to keep me centered on the Lord throughout the night hours. I am so glad to have these prayers, scriptures, and readings available.
