Seen by many as the most talented musical composer of the second half of the 20th Century, Brian Wilson's songs are also among the most memorable ever to have graced the radio airwaves, with a body of work that still remains quite staggering. But like all great writers, he is neither afraid to reveal, nay champion, those who have influenced his work most pertinently, nor to use that influence in his own magical compositions. This CD contains the original versions of songs from the writers and performers who have informed Wilson's own creations most significantly.

Cool concept, but falls short of 5 stars.
This is a cool concept based on information found in Brian biographies & interviews over the years. The producers have culled together 27 titles Brian has identified as influential to his song writing, and no doubt many were/are on his home juke box. But . . .The CD is a UK import which states in very small letters that the project is not authorized by Brian. First red flag. OK, but the description of the CD boasts all "original versions" of the songs by the original artists. Sadly, three of the songs are by the original artists but are inferior sound quality 40 yr old "live" versions from tv shows such as Ed Sullivan. They are not the hit record versions people expect on a CD that claims to be a line up of 27 "original versions." These bogus tracks are Dick Dale's Miserlou, The Byrds' Turn! Turn! Turn!, and most disappointing, The Ronettes' Be My Baby. Oh man,if any song should have been the hit record version it was THIS one!On the bright side the sound quality is very good on the other 24 tracks and the booklet of liner notes explaining the background story of each song is excellent. There are some groovy photos of Brian and the artists in both color and b&w. Without the liner notes and pics I might be thinking 2 stars given that consumers were not made aware of the three muddy "live" tracks which only detract from the flow of the CD. The producers should have mentioned these tracks up front. Or Amazon might indicate "live version" next to these three tracks on their track listing.Bottom line: Buy it, import it to your computer and add the three original tracks to replace the three bad ones. Now you have a 5 star CD to play and 16 pages of background info on the songs that made the most impression on Brian as a song writer.

I didn't know what to expect, its good. Being a collection of Brian's favorites I can see how he considered everything out there. Then created his own world of music. He truly is a genius, I hope he lives a long life an continues to create and release music.

Live Ronettes and Byrds should have been left off the CD. Original Louie Louie was interesting. Otherwise it's all worth a listen.

Brian Wilson Influences
After reading EVERYTHING about Brian Wilson and his musical influences I was MOST pleased with this CD offering. What I like most about it is the idea that Brian Wilson probably STILL listens to these great old songs. A great buy for the price of unlocking his creative mind.

Easy listening.
Nothing to do with the Beach Boys really but if you like music from the late 50s and early 60s this CD is probably for you. It is great for playing in the background at home or for listening to in the car. It also gives an insight into what influenced Brian Wilson's songwriting.
