My Brother's Destroyer

"Them days I didn’t have a past, just a future..."
"Them days I didn’t have a past, just a future. Now I’m old, I got no future so I brood on what’s past."First of all, at the beginning of the book there is a link that will take you to a sanitized version of the book, noting misspelled words and cussing. DON'T follow the link. Read the book as originally written. The "misspelled" words are actually the regional dialect used by the characters in their part of North Carolina. And if you're worried about the cussing you probably shouldn't be reading this book and series anyway - it's down and dirty.Baer Creighton is fifty years old and it's been a hard life. He lives in the woods with his dog making fruited moonshine. His brother claimed the only girl Baer ever loved and tried to kill him when he was younger.. He failed in his attempt but actually have Baer the rare talent to detect lies. One day someone steals his dog, puts him in an organized dog fight, and then drops off an almost dead dog where Baer will find him.And retribution comes calling from Baer to all concerned. This is a great book. I loved the character of Baer, flawed as he is, and yes, he has his flaws but he also has a big heart.I highly recommend this book. I'm now off to read book two in the series THE MUNDANE WORK OF VENGEANCE.

Captures the essence of the Mountains.
If you have grown up anywhere that has a rural subculture, whether the southeast, the Adirondacks, Maine Logers & Canucks, Western States, you will have no problem understanding the characters and the local language. If you are a pretentious snooty wine drinker who reads the Sunday NY Times, because snobby people are supposed to, you will not understand this series.

It desperately needs a proofreader.
In the first five sentences there were five grammar/spelling mistakes. I'm a red neck from the south but I can not tolerate reading with that many mistakes. I topped after the first paragraph and may have missed an awesome book. But some authors need to use the software Grammarly!

DNF
did not care for this one at all. DNF hate, revenge, poisoning, killing, dog fights, disjointed, misspelled words, a sad attempt to sound country hick. Not my cup of tea at all... most just made no sense...

Depressing to say the least
Dark side of life in Appalachia, dog killing, treachery, helplessness of lower class subjects. Not a pleasurable read, couldn't finish. I will say the advertising program is quite successful if not misleading.

An extremely dark, yet compelling story!
I purchased this book by accident, but once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. It's a very dark story of of betrayal and loss that shows the evil that man is capable of. The story takes you to the darkest places in a mans soul and gives you reason to contemplate your own soul. An exciting read, but not for the faint of heart.

What a story!!
I really enjoyed this book. I started reading it on my way to Vegas one day and didn't get too far into the book. Then I didn't really have a lot of time to pick it back up and read like I wanted to, but when I finally did (just the other day), it was had to put down! I practically read the entire book within hours!Baer Creighton is his own type of man with the abiity to sense deception and it worked in his favor. He was a good guy - didn't bother anyone, kept to himself with Fred, and looked after Mae and her children. He was also pretty smart! Baer brought the rain because someone did wrong by Fred, and he did not stop until everyone involved felt his wrath! He feared no one!! Baer got beat up, fell out of a tree, he got shot at, even had a house set afire with him in it, but he still stood his ground and did not back down! I can't wait until the next book comes out!!This book did kind of start out slow, I suppose, but once I got past that, it was nonstop action!! There were times where I vocally reacted to something in the book! The story flowed well and kept my attention! The ending was amazing!! It was like Baer put on his grand finale, dropped the mic, and walked off the stage! I can't wait to see what's next with Baer Creighton!

Great Story!
I liked the character Baer an awful lot. He reminded me of my Southern relatives so much in his values and actions he was completely relatable. An excellent storyline on how he deals out payback and eventually starts on a road to some sort of peace with himself and reconnects with family. Sure there were misspellings here and there but I didn't find that they distracted or detracted from the story in any way. Hopefully, I'm looking forward to reading more from this author in the future.

Perhaps we need a reminder of how brutal the world can be! So we can fight against it !
Purchased this for my husband at his request - so have't read it myself. But he says is a brilliant read, perhaps not for any one who doesn’t like heavy swearing on most pages! Basic story Based in America 1900’s - A local mans dog is stolen & injured by the dog fighting gang who want to take over his illegal whisky still. He gets his dog back but the dog fighters come shoot the poor doggie in his head. Now they are after the whiskey stiller guy too, but he kills all them too. And goes on the run. The next two books are what happens next on the run books. This is not for the tender hearted! It’s more a mans book my husband enjoyed it! ( Not saying all men love violence) I did read thru the first chapter - I can say it keeps the attention, it’s about the world when it wasn’t such a good place & Animal or people welfare wasn’t foremost in anyone’s bucket list!

Mountain mayhem.
Started this book prepared not to like it much, basically because the writing style seemed alien to me. I am glad I continued to read on. This tale is by far and away one of the best I have read recently. The author doesn't mess about and gets stuck in with his characters leaping off the page fully clothed in glorious technicolour. What a feat of writing. Even 'though the story is pure Americana with it's illicit mountain hooch dribbling off the pages I as a non American loved ( and understood ) it perfectly well. Thanks MR. L.

Anti Heroes Don't Come Better Than This
Picked up on a whim, and very glad I did. This is a fantastic read, well paced, with authentic voices. Genuinely funny in places and truly horrific in others.Baer is a wonderfully flawed hero, but he's trying always to do what he sees as the right thing. Not his fault everyone around him lies and dissembles, nor that he's cursed to know it.Bought the second book the moment I finished this one.

Good book.
Good book but plot was a bit too complicated for me. Interest waned a few times but persevered and enjoyed it at the end of the day. Will read another in the series but not just yet.
