Ended up clamping the bow to a table and using just the upright of the stand in reverse to keep working away at it. Review: Great looking and great shooting bow... - Great first bow for aspiring bowyers (bow makers) young and old alike. While you could make (or purchase) both the scraper, bow strings, and tillering stick yourself, their inclusion in this kit, and the clear instructions (along with RudderBows 2 part video on making the bow on Youtube) make getting started fun and easy. It is absolutely amazing how much wood you can remove - and how quickly the bow takes shape - by using just the scraper to remove wood. Do your work over a large trash can, and you can even do most of the work in your living room while watching the video(s) - and by putting a stout piece of plywood (or 2) over the trash can, I was able to put the bathroom scale and tillering stick right on it to "tiller" the bow there, too. The tillering stick" is not necessary for experienced "TILLERING" bow makers (balancing both of the bow's limb to curve and 'draw' precisely the same, in perfect balanced curves with each other, by carefully removing wood from certain spots on each limb after you examine the curves of the bow under "draw" to see where wood should be removed) but a tillering stick is necessary to get a precise draw weight (bow weight) measurement (along with using a bathroom weight scale).
