I thought the twisting would be a pure gimmick, but I love the twist functionality. I use two at a time, but I purchased a soft (yellow) and a medium (blue) and combined one of each. The combination of shaker sounds I get now is pure heaven. The blue helps cut and provide a good "chick" sound, and the yellow gives a great shuffle sound that helps to fill out the overall timbre. Ive separated them and played them one in each hand with poly rhythms and they worked quite well also, with the yellow being better for keeping up a steady rhythm while you accent with the slightly louder blue. The shape of both shakers together is also very nice for using while playing drumset. They sit still very nicely, and are extremely easy to grasp, hold, and shake with one hand while youre using your feet and other hand to do whatever else you need. I really am in love with my shakers and I show them off to all of my percussion friends, I would highly recommend not only getting one set, but mix and match colors, youll get a better sound and you can really tailor it to the use you need. The red one has the loudest and harshest sound, like it's full of small dried beans, and the blue one is right in the middle. I don't know when you'd ever really need or want the red one, but the blue and yellow ones are great. I wrap tape around mine to keep them from twisting apart as I hold a drumstick in my hand with the shaker and for some reason that seems to make it want to twist apart.
