Great book for beginners!
This book provides good information on the basics for a beginner to get started on carving in the round. The projects in the book provide a woodcarver, new to carving in the round, a perfect progression in learning.

Among the Best Teachers and artists to learn from.
As an artist working in two dimensions for many years, I decided to learn how to carve wood in the round, about a year ago. Included in my learning process have been classes, books, videos, websites, and plenty of practice. I am a proactive learner----meaning I like to learn from many different sources. I came across Andrew Thomas' book, "Carving in the Round" at a woodworking show, and having read several other books already, I could see that he is the "real deal". Now, after having worked through four terrific projects I can safely say that I have an understanding not only of when to choose which tool, but of the PROCESS, ie., how to approach a new project. Mr. Thomas moves you through both realistic and abstract projects (unusual for one artist) that gives the reader a progressive method and understanding of using edge tools, primarily, to work with the grain of the wood, how to round forms and make subtle transitions from one area to another. What I feel is different in this book is its emphasis on the importance of basic design; ie. learning how parts relate one to another, and move in space. Mr. Thomas encourages the reader to study the work of modern masters of sculpture to further his/her own artistic vision. How else can you develop your own patterns (albeit way down the road)? This is a basic concept lacking in most books on carving. Also of importance, especially to the American reader, is the introduction of the European method of always working with both hands on the tool. Not holding the wood in one hand saves that hand from developing carpel tunnel from squeezing, and it also gives more control on the tool. I highly rate this book as a must for your collection.

Prime primer
This is an excellent book for those starting out in carving in the round. It inevitably covers timber, tools and so forth - it is aimed at beginners - adequately but not to the extent of confusing the tyro. This is a plus point. As a teacher of woodcarving, I have found that the major problem beginners have when working in the round is to visualize the relationship of this part with that. Andrew Thomas deals with this expertly. Much to be recommended, see his website also.I can't say the same for Amazon, the tax-dodging offshore cheats.

Fantastic book, with excellent close up detailed photos
I'm actually bought this book to help me to learn how to carve wax, for casting silver jewellery rather than woodcarving. I was struggling how to work in 3D. Even after a very quick flip through I can tell it's going to help me enormously. This book is very well laid out, with good, clear photos. Highly recommend!
