But, above all, these profiles in courage, the stories of brave men and women who proudly served their country in a bold new journey of space discovery. HISTORY OF THE SPACE SHUTTLE: Columbia’s autonomous journey around the Earth during February 1981 opened a new chapter in space exploration. The advent of a “spaceworthy” vehicle severed our dependence upon “Mission Control,” and placed the emphasis upon the new vistas observed by the astronauts themselves. The Space Shuttle represented the culmination of more than a century’s worth of thought and technological experimentation. This 5-DVD collection features hours of rare archival film and photographs dating back to the pioneering efforts of the 1960s that paved the way for Challenger’s ascent. After placing NASA’s “Space Workhorse” in context, History of the Space Shuttle takes you behind the scenes of every mission the vessels have undertaken during the past three decades. These years have been intensely dramatic ones for the program, as scientists have struggled to cope with new contingencies that the founders of rocket propulsion never dreamed of encountering. The march of progress has never been particularly smooth, and this series does not flinch from examining the tragic aspects of the Space Shuttle saga—including the horrific disintegration of Challenger an mere 16 minutes from home on February 1st 2003. Whether you are an aficionado of the space program or merely dipping into its lore, this extraordinary set features material that will open your eyes and pique your interest.

Extensive collection of great footage, not much of a documentary
Madacy Entertainment repackages this stuff from time to time and releases it again (and again!). In fact, if you bought some of their previous products, then you may already have it.This is a combination of two products: History of the Space Shuttle: Collector's Edition (5-pk)(Tin) and NASA: 50 Years of Space Exploration *without* the collector tins and booklets. The discs are the same but they are in a cardboard box instead. There is a lot of footage and I mean lots (over 18 hours), if you are a collector of this stuff, you will want this. The collection is quite extensive. Most of the footage is NASA pr films although there is also some other old films as well. The first five discs are actual footage of the early space years (Apollo, Mercury, etc.). There are also some old documentaries as well. A lot of the footage is public domain. The next five discs are space shuttle footage and lots of it.If you are are a space nut than these old original films are historical and interesting. All of these films are from the late '60s through the 80s. The space shuttle stuff is downright interesting--especially Columbia.Nice pictures on cardboard cases (There are 2 five packs), although the author that wrote the text on them needs to back off on the hyperbole.*No* attempt is made whatsoever to remaster these films. They are shown in their faded, well-worn '60s, '70s and '80s glory. This is a serious disappointment!. I expected some attempt to remaster some of these as DVD quality. A few of these nearly 40 year-old films are of such poor quality. This is not really a cohesive documentary and the absolute bare minimum is used to string this old footage together as a documentary series. To be fair though, the films (episodes?) are presented in a chronological order that makes sense. Some of the narration can be poor. The narrator often takes a break and leaves us with 10s of minutes of raw footage, this can actually get quite boring.PROS:Lots of thorough great raw footage. It is hard to go wrong with this subject matter--its the NASA space programs! The depth of the material is outstanding. The footage--just wow!CONS:Lack of cohesiveness, seems more like a collection of films and less like a documentary series. Sadly, nothing is remastered at all.I hope this explains what to expect. Price seems fair for what you get--a 10 disc set with very nice DVD lables. Also note that this is a repackage of some of their other products.

Great educational collection
A great 10 DVD collection for any space enthusiast. It does remind me of the lame high school educational films with weird 70's horror movie music but being a bit older I can get past that. Great for young and old! I learnt a lot about NASA during the periods of time I wasn't alive. I hope my generation gets some sort of space travel. The ISS is one of the greatest human achievements but there is somethin unexplainable about seeing man explore a new surface. Glad I picked this one up a lot of content for a reasonable price.
